A safety can help a slow LB deal with a fast TE. A slow LB can theoretically deal better with a slow TE than a fast LB can, as he will have more SP in other skills.

At least you force a slight delay in the rushers path for other players to potentially get in on the play.
Yeah, but you aren't going to be there to make the play if you ignore the Man awareness and coverage awareness skills. Doesn't matter how fast you are, you are going to get burned if you are a sprinter with no vision. The physical skills cost an enormous amount of SP compared to the other skills, but small investments don't really lead to big results like they did in GLB1. The difference in top end speed isn't really noticeable for a bot with 30 sprinting and a bot with 40 sprinting, but the 25 points you would be able to add to deflection skill for the same cost is very noticeable.

Yeah. If you overspend on physical skills, you are going to get destroyed by bots who have no investment in physical skills and who have a huge investment in technical skills.

You can have all the physical tools you want but if you don't have the deflecting, CT, MA, and SA's to help out you are just pissing in the wind anyways. Especially the deflecting because that is what puts the hand up. Also to a point vertical as well.

You can always pray that the WR has bad hands/catch-in-traffic and that the QB has bad technique. In that case, your mere presence might be enough (maybe with intimidation?) to cause the incompletion.
I see vertical as being much more useful in underneath coverage... my investment in vertical hasn't seemed to translate well into deflections on the CBs where I have already capped out on pass coverage skills.

I see jump deflections all the time against me and have lots of jump deflections myself cuz I play tons of coverage.

Yup. I mean, you could go with a niche defender, but you better hope the other team has niche players too that happen to line up well with your guy. Or you could just make a generalist and force them to beat you.

I seem to be undervaluing or misunderstanding footwork, outside of the backpedaling when is it used for dbs?

it is also sidesteppng, which helps get around blockers as a defender

Would this be the wrong place to mention that the Stunners are looking to add a coverage strong safety?
oh - it is? my bad.

In my eyes, lb's should have
30 sprint, quickness, footwork
with high pursuit and decent man coverage and break run block ....jus sayin
im new but ive been in thus lab

Rotation is the biggest element of coverage right now and that is mostly footwork related.

That would be ok in sophmore and in small cases seasoned. Beyond that tho...liability.

I guess I just don't see how progressively increasing physical skills a bit every season, by a smaller amount to account for increasing costs, is a bad idea. Are ya'll arguing that Veterans with sub 60 sprinting/quickness/footwork are a good idea? Cause I think a team with a defense built like that will probably have decided to re-roll to rookie before they even make it to veteran.
