I heard it all the time, I was in when 9/11 happened though.

I think that's the difference maker there. I was in from March '93 til Sept 7th, 2001. Interesting timing there.

I served from August 2000 to July 2004 and my MOS was 13M (MLRS). When I joined, I almost went Airborne also but the my knees were shot by then. I was 32 when I enlisted

1980 - 1984 USAF - Communications / Materials Bentwaters RAF, 1983 Display Determination against Russian border with Turkey - reinforced Britian as they went south to reclaim their sheep islands off Argentina - logistical support in Panama. I was the "parts guy" and whenever the planes came back and needed something replaced - I had to shit one on the spot...

I spent my first 5 years floating around the world repairing Grumman avionics/weapons systems on the F14, A6, and EA-6B. Spent time on the aircraft carriers Eisenhower, Nimitz, Kennedy, and Enterprise. Spent my last 3 years on instructor duty which basically meant teaching til noon then playing golf until the sun went down.
