So, 2 close games today and that was it.

The first round of the playoffs went pretty much as planned. A lot of blowouts with no real upsets. Hopefully the second round will bring some more intensity to the games from both sides.

ROUND 2
Lion

Fulham (17-0) vs San Francisco (13-4)
Last match-up: Week 7 - Fulham wins 34-16
Fulham made short work of the Diggits in the first round as they dominated the game through 3 quarters. Their offense came close to putting up 800 yards while their defense forced a number of turnovers. We pretty much expected that though so no shocker. The Demons started off a little slowly as they fell behind 7-13 in the 1st Q and were down 24-27 at the end of the first half. They came out and dominated in the second half though as they outscored Massawa 34-17. Offensively they ran the ball well and played turnover free (they did fumble once but didn't lose the ball). Their defense was the real story in this game though. They shut down Massawa's running game and forced them to air it out which led to 2 INTs. Add to that some stellar play on special teams by LB Neidermayer in forcing 2 fumbles.

Last time around the Demons gave Fulham a few headaches with their defense but turnovers made it hard to capitalize on any momentum. If the Demons want to upset the Hellfish they'll need to find a way to keep the ball in their hands and force Fulham's offense to the sidelines. I gave the Demons the win in the first round based on their progress through the second half of the season but this week Fulham gets the win based off their stellar season.

Franchise (15-2) vs Cagliari (15-2)
Last match-up: Week 12 - Franchise wins 76-24
Franchise dismantled Wallachia in the first round to send them home early. There was really no contest as Franchise just dominated and topped 900 yards of offense while holding the ball for 40 minutes.

Cagliari had a tougher game against CWE. It looked like they would pull away early as they jumped out to a 21-10 lead after one quarter and went into halftime up 35-20. Something happened to their defense in the third quarter as CWE unleashed big play after elephant-sized play to close the gap. At the end of three quarters the score was Outbreak 38, CWE 41. Outbreak would strike first in the 4th to make it 45-41 Outbreak but CWE struck right back with a TD. That would be the last time CWE would hold the lead though as Cagliari rattled off the next 13 points of the game to take home the win.

I like both of these teams and weeks ago I wouldn't know where to go here. Both teams have great offenses but I think the Franchise defense stands out a little more as a whole so I'm going with them.

Elephant
Nairobi (17-0) vs WWR (13-4)
Last match-up: Week 13 - Nairobi wins 47-10
Nairobi got by ABD with ease in the first round and the Rhinos also did the same with TDP if not in such a blown out fashion.

I think we all know where this is going and I'll say one thing here. WWR played the closest game against Nairobi this season...and still lost by 37 points.

There is absolutely, totally, entirely, positively, undoubtedly, without question, no way WWR could win this one. (I expect a check in the freaking mail if you guys win!)

Sons (16-1) vs TBH (13-4)
Last match-up: Week 8 - SoA wins 27-26
Last but most definitely not least we have what I believe could be the best game in the second round.

The Sons took ICB down in the first round by imposing their will on them through some good old fashioned smashmouth football. TBH went out and did the same thing to BSS as they played some outstanding ball hogging O and smothering defense.

Last time these teams faced off the Sons made a huge 4th Q comeback and managed to avoid an OT by a sheer stroke of luck when TBH missed an extra point with a minute remaining. Can TBH capitalize on what they did last time to make this a competitive game again? If they can do that and find a way to avoid letting SoA back in the game late they can pull out the win. I'm still not convinced they can pull it off but they have a legit shot at pulling it off. I just don't think it's a strong enough shot to place my bets on them.

I say it won't be a 37 point spread on this one.

GL to both!

I was looking forward to this game until I saw the ass kicking that SoA put on today! Nicely done...This is a great matchup of two longtime APL teams who always end up in a dog fight. Should be interesting...
