yeah, you can lose the first game but still slinch the first seed as long as you beat all the teams in your conference.

i think it's worded poorly

i think it is meant to be on a seasonal basis, rather than individual game basis

As in "If you see no easy wins on your schedule, you are the easy win", rather than "If a game looks difficult, you are an easy win".
