Correct, sir.
I'm a 2L at Penn State-Dickinson School of Law.
Just made the 6 hour drive from southwest VA to get back up here today. I'm absolutely beat.

I married a Univ. of TX law grad. At least as a 3L you can see the end in sight! I wouldn't wish law school on anyone. Especially if you go to one of the schools that teaches theory. Real life law is nothing like law school for my wife. Best of luck to you!

You've got that right: being halfway through right now, I can finally start seeing the light at the end of the tunnel!
Thankfully, PSU-DSL doesn't teach as much theory. There are a couple of courses, but they do tend to stray from that.
And having interned, I can agree that there's a disjunct between law school and real life. I tell you, I believe I learned more in my summer internship than I did with 30 hours of credits last year.

I thank you very much, I'll certainly need it. And my regards to your wife in her practice, as well!

What's the recruiting atmosphere like these days? I practice in NYC and I've seen too many firms letting people go, cutting back on hiring, and some are even folding up their tents this year. I wish you all the best; it's a rough time to be joining the profession.

My wife started her own firm 2 years ago. It lasted a year. She was fresh out of law school and didn't have the heart/guts to charge people what she needed to stay in business. Her partner in the practice is still going strong. My wife is now a legal aide attorney. Pay sucks but bennies are pretty stout!

If it's any indicator, the Pennsylvania state legislature (prodded by Ed Rendell) instituted a hiring freeze for state government for 2009. Basically, no new government jobs, and this spills over into Commonwealth attorneys, pro bono, and the like. As far as internships in the state of Pennsylvania, all internships this summer will be unpaid. Thankfully, if worse comes to worse, I've found a paid internship in a Virginia courthouse for the summer. The pay is good ($9/hour), but I was truly looking to get some experience shadowing attorneys, as I was a judicial intern last summer, as well. Of course, all this may be a wash if Obama's "government stimulus" package has any sort of success, or even if it gets passed quickly enough. But I'm not holding my breath.

As far as what I'm looking to do after law school, I don't believe I'd be best suited for a large Washington/Philadelphia/NYC/Boston firm. Of course, the pay would be nice for a new attorney (and the mountain of bills that would have to be paid), but I've done my homework, and I think that it would be too taxing on my fiancee and me. The "sleepless nights" I've so often heard about don't really bother me, but I want to spend the rest of my life with her, and I don't want to put her through that. However, I've talked with many attorneys who've worked for smaller firms, and they had glowing remarks about their time there. I believe I have enough contacts in southwest Virginia to become a junior associate at a smaller firm, but again, southwest Virginia doesn't give a family the greatest opportunity to grow. Great homey environment, and it's the "Bible Belt", but that area's losing population in droves, and there's not enough opportunities for kids. An area like Charlottesville, near my undergrad alma mater, would be nice, but again I lack the contacts there.

Needless to say, I haven't quite got it entirely figured out.

Did your wife have solid business starting up her own firm fresh out of law school? I've heard mixed reactions: some say they couldn't give their business away, and some say that they did just fine. If this is the case, it may cause me to reconsider this option.

And I could imagine that it would be easy to think about charging less for the services than it's really worth, especially with clients who are in a tough financial spot.

They were/are a family law practice. No shortage of clients. Wasn't to bad for being in a city that churns out 500 lawyers every year. She just didn't have any outside business acumen to understand how to make a business work. Believe the tax loss was nice for filing for us!
