(Reading over my post again, I was a little rough on what was just an innocent comment that Frank Miller could have been listed with the other writers on my example OOTY list. Sorry. As you may be able to tell, I worked at a comic shop and had to deal with Ennis and Miller-loving mouth-breathers day in, day out.)
Frank Miller is the Monkees to Alan Moore's Beatles.
Dark Knight Returns could possibly be the second best graphic novel of all time, despite the fact that it almost single-handedly created the dark, violent extremist style of writing that nearly killed comic books forever in the late 80s and early 90s.
Sin City and Ronin strike a genius point every other volume or so, but over the run of a series fails to be truly original.
300, All-Star Batman and Robin, even the critically-favored Daredevil run were all just Frank Miller's hyperbolic, homoerotic, ultra-violent wannabe noir vomited all over different characters again and again. Something seriously warped happened to that guy having to do with clergymen and violence against women.
A FRANK MILLER OPENING PAGE:
"The streets are covered with the grisly blood-stained tears of mutilated child prostitutes as the rain tap dances on the bloated bodies of those forgotten long ago. A woman screams out in the distance - another victim of the night."
For anyone who is about to get all up in arms about my assessment of Frank Miller, I've got four words for you:
I'M THE GODDAMN BATMAN!
