So how do you subtract points from this 5 categories

An imperfect system if it uses only the starter levels as basis. I would think that if you want to rate passing and rushing defense you would use actual game performance. You give no account for the depth of the team (which looking at our upcoming game against the Tide, depth is where we hope to keep this one in reach). SOS would certainly have to be factored in as well since it's easier to rack up bigger (or smaller for Defense) numbers against weaker teams.

All valid points and things I've already looked into taking account for and hopefully can eventually come up with solutions for that I can easily make use of. Consider this version 1.0 and that's version 3.0+

Interesting.. Well, I've been toying around with a system based on performance rather than levels of the players. It's a preliminary one based mostly on efficiency more than anything else. I wanted something a little more in depth, that rewarded efficiency, and used numbers easy to quickly find (so I wouldn't have to spend hours looking up/entering data).

Rank Points Team Pass Off Rush Off Total Def Def Opp
1 51 Footstar 7 1 1 4
2 51 Virginia 1 5 6 1
3 46 New Orleans 10 4 2 2
4 46 Agressors 3 3 5 7
5 46 Tuscaloosa 6 6 3 3
6 39 Montreal 2 10 8 5
7 39 Chicago 4 2 10 9
8 39 Oakland 5 7 7 6
9 25 Myrtle Beach 13 11 4 11
10 20 Maine 9 16 11 8
11 19 Ferris State 14 8 9 14
12 19 Midway 12 9 12 12
13 14 Nashville 8 13 14 15
14 12 Gulf Coast 11 15 13 13
15 10 New York 15 14 15 10
16 4 Cleveland 16 12 16 16

Def Opp = "Defensive Opportunism" - the best term I could think of to describe formula based on things like takeaways, hurries, sacks, tackle %. Could have easily been called Defensive Hustle too.

Any suggestion for improvement? I expect these rankings to bounce a great deal throughout the early going of the season, but it should settle down quite a bit when we get closer to the playoffs. I couldn't think of any really objective way to evaluate schedule strength this early in the season.

Well looks like a big difference in the two rankings systems .. guess we can use them both .. College has 2 rankings.. and there will always be disputes.

Looking at the new set I would have to say Virginia still has a lot to prove with the #2 ranking.. We will see.. There 2-1 and ranked ahead of 3 unbeaten teams including a team they lost too ...

Not sure what "Def Opp" really is .. all the top teams have the least amount of tackles since there on the field the least ..1 ..2 ..3.. Punt ..

Only time will tell who is the best of the best ...!

Virginia has a big test in our next game. I expect us to drop down the rankings quite a bit. The big week 3 win has us slightly over-rated I think. Def Opp is something I came up with. Defensive takeaways and harrying the offense weigh into it heavily.

The western conference seemed to hold truer to the standings. Guess I'll see how it holds up as the season goes on. Again there's still no accounting for your opponent's strength, but I feel that will sort itself out later in the season.

Thanks for the rankings Gary. Maine is near the bottom, but we've been seeing some improvement lately. Keeping it close with that monster Tuscaloosa team is a moral victory for us.

Maurice was telling me last night he made a calculation error in his initial rankings - you guys will see, the next rankings will be a bit closer to what he intended.

Both rankings are great...nice work guys.

And, yes, the SC updates here would be great.

This is turning into one of the best leagues out there. Keep it up.
