I agree Weiss. I'm often frustrated by how the sim goes, but that's just the way the game works. Take our game against the Avengers this season.

We kicked the go ahead field goal with 34 seconds left because the piss poor clock management of the sim has bitten us in the past. They manged to get 4 plays off in 21 seconds and steal the victory.

I was frustrated by the loss, but kept my cool (somewhat) because I knew there are limitations to the sim. I'm just glad it didn't cost us anything in the long run (except some fan support).

I'm sure someone will complain about their sim.

I kind of enjoy reading through the self-indulgent whining after close losses where the sim doesn't do exactly what a team wants... in some cases, even when everyone knows in advance the limitations of the sim.

For example, I've already seen this postseason an example from Western Europe AA3, where the 2nd-seeded Wales Whales lost their Round 1 game against the Normandy Invasion by a score of 51-50. Following the loss, the owner went to the forum complaining about the lack of 2-point conversions. Now granted, I'd like to see 2-point conversions implemented, too (and there's every reason to think they will be at some point), but c'mon dude, your team just gave up 51 points to the 7th-place team in your conference, and you're going on about the lack of 2-point conversions, which you knew going in weren't part of the game?

If the Vanguards manage to pull out a win against us today, kudos to them. So long as the sim is legit, I've got no complaints. Now if the sim really does screw us (like those rare documented times where the AI Tester says one thing, but something else happens during the game)...
If you have children, you may want to avert their eyes from my obscenity-riddled rant.

This is exactly right. I also think there should be a list of known AI glitches somewhere, but that would require that Bort actually care about making the game fair.

One of the biggest issues in the game is communication (or lack thereof). Something really needs to be done to allow users to track Bort's comments easily, without having to dig through every forum looking for them. Absolutely no question about it.

Well, whatever sim Honolulu gets today we deserve. I set the defense, haha.

Speaking of glitches and the actual sim differing from what AI Tester says, as I was watching our Week 16 game, I noticed that LLLL called some plays that weren't even in our AI, despite the Tester assuring me that everything would be fine. I can't say that instills a lot of confidence in the sim on the eve of Playoff Round 1.

Yea good points, sometimes the SIM really has a mind of its own and calls plays that are not in the AI. For some reason we run a 4-2 Nickle against 3WR Pro-Set much more than I have it set for. I even went as far as taking it out completely, and it still runs the play.

I agree with Powell 100% as well, the communication lines are horrid and its impossible to know what bugs or glitches Bort is aware of. There are many, there are many complaints, and people will just keep on complaining cuz nobody has any diea if their going to be fixed.

It seems like Bort is more concerned with getting new members and expanding the game as opposed to fixing the problems that already lie within. Us long-time users are here, we are not leaving,(yet) and he knows it, I really feel like he takes advantage of this. Can't say I wouldn't do it myself, but he surely needs a full-time staff here. Seems like ehs the only person who actually changes the code.

It is frustrating when there are glitches to the play calling. In one of our games this season, we elected to punt it from the opponents 25 yard line instead of kicking the FG. There were 2 other times I think we should have gone for the FG but kept punting it for touch backs. The only good thing you can say, all teams have an equal shot at getting the glitches.

I've started to wonder if the AI does what it wants if you put in an output it can't figure out.

For example, if you put in 3-1-7 Man, Blitz FS and that isn't something that is accounted for, the sim reverts to your Basic Settings (not your other AI options) to find a play. I had that happen a couple times this season where I had an "exotic" scheme dialed up for a specific situation and it never got called, despite that the AI Tester said.

And Bort is the only coder for the game. He's too afraid that the sim code will be leaked if he brings someone else in. Honestly, that's probably a valid fear. At some point, however, he's going to have to bite the bullet.

Think of how much money Bort has made. Do you really think the only reason he doesn't want to bring in another programmer is the off chance somebody screws him?

Well, I beleve the game didn't like us so simmed bad our first 11 games. Then simmed good our last 5. Just kidding.

I'm a believer in home field, and I know everyone thinks I'm crazy, but I do not believe in making excuses after you lose.

Excuses are my biggest pet Peeve. Usually I don't give a fuck why you screwed up/are late/etc. Just say sorry and I'm cool. When you make up some far fetched excuse, it bugs me. Don't know why I just typed that, might be a little drunk still

Worrying about leaked code is pretty bogus. The information contained there is stuff that should be known anyhow. Check out any other mmorpg. They eventually realize that keeping everything secret is pretty stupid. And if they want to keep it a secret, they have the same problem Bort has with leaks (if not more). You still have to use your sense to figure out the best way to build a football team. Just knowing how frequently Pump Fake is going to fire off against different agility level CBs isn't going to get it done.

But Bort doesn't know how to hire someone to help him or run a decent sized organization. My guess is that the problem is that he's a programmer, not a manager. He's complained about the difficulty in finding good people, but every decent company on the planet has this problem and they find ways to solve it.

I enjoy playing this game, but it definitely has a limited lifespan if Bort can't expand his operation to improve it.

Sadly, I agree. Back in the 90s, I played in a wrestling E-Fed called CyberSlam (anyone else hear of it? If so, you probably would remember me.). Lots of E-Feds existed, but the developer of this one had some things that made it unique. It got pretty popular, people started to learn how things worked. Min-max builds started becoming the norm. And, eventually, it disappeared.

I could see GLB following a very similar life cycle.

I thought Bort was trying to come up with some sort of console game that incorporated this type of idea. I would imagine if he went ahead with that then his efforts would be lost on this format of GLB and it would definitely die off.

I still find it funny how long this game remained "beta" and people were having to pay money. Bort is a genius when it comes to separating people from their hard earned cash. I don't know how he plans on porting this to a game console format. Seems to me it would be a carbon copy of what EA has already done with its NFL franchise game. I'm guessing thats where he go the idea for this in the first place.

Wow what a tough loss to swallow, how we came out and played so incredibly poor is beyond me...Good job DV you guys had a good gameplan and once we had to pass we played to your strength. Very clever strong-i play you guys came up with, Dime C0? Nice

Seeing a loss like that really sucks after we played so well the entire season, very disappointing to say the least. Gonna have to stop spending time on planning and stuff cuz it seems not to matter much. Did alot of things that we didnt do all season long and just lost it.

Good-luck.

If it makes you feel any better, the Steel Riders handed it to us. Honestly, I fucked up the AI...in more than one place. Nothing like setting it to "Long Pass WR", but setting the formation to "Goal Line" to completely hose a comeback chance.

That was probably the most embarassing game I've ever been a part of.
