Move 2000 miles away.

Then it boils down to a phone call and maybe a card if you're really feeling it.

I sent my mom fishing lures for Mother's Day.

There's a 'you might be a redneck' joke in there somewhere.

Getting an email from your professor telling you the final can be dropped if it is your lowest grade, the day before the final.

Fuck yes. I got, in succession, a 95, 99, and 97 on exams, and my grade would go up less than .3% even if I get a 100% on the final.

Guess who's skipping that shit and catching up on sleep?

I've always hated that as an educator, tbh.
This time of year, our students always bitch and moan that we don't have a policy similar to other schools where if you have a 90 or above, you do not have to take the final. I tell them you're damned right I want you to take the final. I could honestly care less how well a student is able to cram and learn the information in small chunks for unit exams. I want to know, when it's all said and done, over the course of the entire semester, did they actually learn everything that they were supposed to learn? Did they retain it? Even more importantly, are they able to apply concepts across multiple units? Are they able to begin to synthesize it all together and begin to make sense out of and use the information as a whole, rather than simply remembering it in the small bits that represent unit exams. There are many questions on my final exam which do just that, require them to use skills from multiple areas which represent the entire course.

It was unexpected, no one was even bugging him about it. He just emails us about it like a super late christmas present. Each exam was half cumulative too, perhaps that factors in to his gauging of what we actually learned?

That's backwards to my experiences. Final always counts, but if you do better on the final than the midterm, midterm doesn't count.

That's how all my first year law classes were... 30 to 40% final at Christmas. Since none of us had ever written a law final before, they give you a chance to learn how to write them without killing your grades.

My advice would be to go take it anyway. You never know when you might need a good word from that professor.
