I'm a Ph.D. polymer engineer who happened to eschew the sciences for trading equities and index futures 3 years ago. I agree that money does not necessarily equate to happiness but it certainly doesn't hurt. No debt (except mortgage) really reduces the stress. I work to live, I don't live to work. BTW, this country doesn't compensate scientists, teachers, etc., like it should, rather it throws ungodly sums of money at those in the entertainment (sports included) and financial industries. I switched to the dark side to be better appreciated financially even though I had to give up all notions of bettering the world (all scientists think they can).

+1. Sad but true. I'm a civil/environmental engineer and it's the same in my industry. I slaved away with a consulting firm as a design engineer in a cubicle for a couple years fresh out of college not earning what I felt my education was worth, and then woke up and changed careers by going into technical sales. Now I make twice as much $$$ doing less technical work. If you're not somehow attached to sales, you're pretty much going to have a cap on your income at some point. Of course, you have to have some people skills. Apparently finding technical engineers with sales/people skills is pretty tough or they wouldn't pay me what they do. lol.
