BTW very impressed by Nex's zone defense as it looks the way to go to counter the more pass oriented teamsThanks! I'm super happy with this iteration of the zone defense. I'm happy to share thoughts and strategies around it. It's a small competitive advantage right now, but it's way better for the game if people have more options in the long run. Plus, I firmly believe that one of the reasons it is successful is because it is still relatively new and rare, and as the taltented OCs of the league see it more and have more time to learn and adjust, more holes will start appearing. I already know of a number of them, but I'll not mention that for now.
The high level summary version is that I *think* it requires a pretty specific, team-wide build philosophy in order to work, where all of the defensive backfield (cov LBs included) have to have a combination of intercept and knock-loose, because just having one or another doesn't have enough "chances" (i.e. you need a chance to disrupt a play with an intercept before the ball gets to teh receiver, and a chance with KL after the ball gets to the receiver). And then it has to have zone focus, ball hawk, and super vision in order to get people to swarm to the ball. Oh and jackhammer to augment KL. So it's a really demanding build where you have to go a little lower in speed, agility, and vision than you would normally be comfortable with, which means that it is very hard to then turn aroudn and make those same players play in man coverage.
Maybe there's a way to somehow combine zone and man in the same base defense (and I do it at times out of necessity), but if so, that's for someone with a larger brain and more time than myself.
