The divisions still would be relevant because you play the schedule based on the division. The only difference between division top team and the overall top is the overall top would stop a team with a losing record from making the playoffs. In theory, in most cases it should be the top in the division and one wildcard because in an easy league a team should go 15-1. But when the top team in a weak division goes 6-10 and makes the playoffs over a 12-4 team that had to play tough teams two times there is no one benefiting from this. It just puts a hole into a system.

That just makes it worse because the best division has to face the best teams twice while the worst division only faces them once. Hence there is still a giant hole in the structure. The entire idea around divisions was based on exactly the way it is. It pairs competition mostly down to a smaller number of teams within a league to make the playoffs thus giving teams more sense to continue playing hard throughout the season. It also rewards the next best record in the league. The fact that you are spouting off about the 3rd best record is just kinda nonsense.

And as a counter example to your point, I present the Oberon League.

Three of the best four teams are in the alpha division. The top four teams are blatantly obvious. And yet with the current structure a team that will likely have a losing record is going to win the gamma division and make the playoffs while two quality teams are going to be left out.

How does that improve competition for the entire league?

You don't see how that makes the gamma division a tight race for the playoffs?

Talking about the 3rd place team in a division is irrelevant. Their record is irrelevant. They got to play the teams in their division twice. TWICE. If they couldn't make the playoffs between that what is the point of offering a bitch session about their "right"?

If the structure was as you want it. The playoffs may as well start yesterday.

Its not even about the 3rd best record and you just reiterated my point. When a team has an easier schedule and can't manage to have a top record why should that be rewarded? They should win enough to make the playoffs. =\

It's either about the 3rd place team in one division or the second in another. Regardless the competition continues throughout the season. Not only in the division you perceive as bad, but also between the wild card position. Under your standards that Oberon league is already set. But under this structure there is still a lot of movement that can happen between now and the end.

I don't care if a race is tight or not. I want to see the best play each other, not a bad team with a losing record get in because they lucked out and had nothing but even worse teams in their division with them.

Oh, and the Alpha division teams haven't played each other twice yet, so ya, that part of your argument is meaningless. It'd be meaningless anyway because it doesn't change that a really bad team is going to make the playoffs.

That part isn't meaningless because they do play each other twice.

You could care less about competition but you want to change it for competition wat?

And you still haven't provided a reason for divisions under your best record notion. Divisions would be absolutely useless.

Regardless it's whatever. I'm bored of the glb1 structure and this is by far a more fun setup.

The fact that every regular season game is important makes the game a lot more fun imo.
