Well, we can see a select few on this site have not received the education they so desperately needed. First, Clinton - that is perhaps the most disrespectful comment I have seen on this site. I, myself as a teacher, feel the system must have let you down in some way, and that is too bad. To have this kind of resentment towards the system is an epic failure. Perhaps because it is that you were not able to receive the special education services that I could provide you? Perhaps it is because no one would play with you during recess? Who knows?

But to say "majoring in education is for morons," you are really saying that the United States is completely failing as a country. Maybe we will soon not be the world's predominant power, but we will still have a great influence. Your condemnation of our profession says that you would like to live somewhere else. Please, go right ahead.

I can a sure you that Vegas, as his co-worker, is as educated as he says he is. We both went through the UW system, that would be University of Wisconsin for you littleone, which is annually among the highest ranking systems in the country. We both attended/attending (for myself) well recognized private institutions for our master's. To come out and say someone is not who they say there, is a joke. Now, I know there are many of agents out there that make stuff up about themselves all of the time to feel better about who they are, but that is not SheVegas. He shoots from the hip all of the time, and that frankly is refreshing.

Then you have Lefty Wall. Another classy post. SheVegas stands for the nickname that was kiddingly bestowed upon our hometown. You are another example of how the system failed. If you want to go that far with your comments, go right ahead. But know that the two of us are very secure with who we are and what we do. We make a difference in children's lives. Clinton, what do you do? Can you honestly say your job has as much importance as what a teacher does? Be careful how you answer this, because I truly believe what we do is the most important thing in the world. And SheVegas is damn good at what he does and the children he works with. None of you would last more then a week with those kids.

Ahh, well Lorenzo, allow me to retort.

All childish "you didn't have friends at recess" comments aside, your post is lacking in substance.

Your "profession" if you choose to call it that, attracts the dimwitted to it - while I will stand behind my comment, I do not blame you for being attracted to the subject, as most of you have a heavy heart and "want to make a difference" in the world. Unfortunately you also take the easy route to do such a thing.

In that respect, I actually see more negative than positive, because instead of trying to make the world a better place by employing those who could properly reach and teach our youth, we get an industry which employs those who generally are not the most capable for the task at hand. We get the hearts, but unfortunately, the minds are generally looking for more successful fields to be a part of, rather than fields where the oldest (who are generally the least competent for the job) are considered the most successful. Tenure is a terrible thing. The fact that most of you will spend $50k on an education that takes 5 years to complete, only to return $30k/year career speaks volumes for why you must enter it if you're not stupid... I believe a truly qualified teacher should make six figures. Unfortunately I don't think 95% of those in the industry are qualified for it.

Never mind the fact that routinely, across the country, at any college, education majors rank among the highest average GPA - is that because education majors are smarter than the average student? Absolutely not. It's because the rest of the collegiate world has decided to cover its eyes to the fact that the students are not graded in any sort of reasonable manner whatsoever. The fact that most masters programs will allow those who wish to enter the program dozens of attempts at the MSAT in order to get that extra student and additional funding to their programs is disgusting. Being a 3.5 student as an education major is about the equivalent of a 2.5 GPA for any other real major.

I know quite a bit about Madison-Wisconsin as that was one of the schools I had considered for my undergraduate, and I also attended nearby University of Chicago for my masters. They do have quite a good school there at UW, but unfortunately like any other education program, it is a laughing stock.

So good for you, and can I honestly say my job has greater importance than that of a teacher? Most certainly I can. I do not rely on the subjective statement, "touching the life of a child," (which is also an arrogant and asinine statement to boot) when saying that I have made a difference in the world today.

One of my biggest problems with the educational system is their refusal to allow standardized testing scores to be the basis for judgment on their performance. The truth to the matter is that while the education system has been flushed with more master degrees that necessary, our output from public education has declined year over year compared to most other civilized nations. Rather than accept the fact that we need a drastic overhaul of our current system, the educational system keeps putting band aids on things, classifying things as "learning disabilities," and refusing to use statistical data - you know that pesky statistical data that every other successful industry relies on to better itself - as a measure of performance.

With all of that said, I dated an education major during most of my undergraduate years because she had a smoking hot body. I met more stupid people enrolled with her in that masters program than I've ever met anywhere else in my life. Glad to know I've got two more of you here Lorenzo and SheVegas.

Trying to cover our field with a blanket statement is quite naive. You have no idea what it takes to qualify for special education. Everything in our area is dependent upon standardized scores. And have you heard about a little thing call, "No Child Left Behind?" There are measures being taken to get to a more objective level, but it will take a while.

I love the fact about how you think you make a bigger difference, though. It is becuase of people like you that the educational system is where it is. Twenty years ago no student would ever think about talking back to a teacher and if there was ever a dispute the parent would tend to side with the teacher. Now, the child can do nothing wrong, which is in my opinion, and I have only been teaching for a few years, where the system is failing. If your cliental were in a horrible frame of mind, could you succeed in your profession? I think not. It is now our job to work through these difficulties and basically teach to the standards.

I really don't know why I feel like justifying myself to someonen like yourself. I mean, when you say someone doesn't know shit and call them a faggot, you do not deserve any respect. But you come from the private sector where everything is grand! There are no morons in those fields. Okay Ahmadinejad! I agree there are teachers out there that should not be, but every field has that. To insult everyone who enters this field is a joke. I will place my IQ against anyone's. It is what I felt compelled to do in life. Life certainly is not all about money. If that were the case, I would have jumped on the job offered to me out of school, for the company I worked at over the summers, and make $150-200K per year. That really doesn't matter to me, at all. I take the challenge of where this country is going, due to views like your's, and will try to fix it.

So which is it? It's either dependent on standardized scoring, or it's subjective, dumbass. Don't give me the "take a while" line when you just told me the exact opposite.

And I do make a bigger difference than working with piles of shit in a special educational program - producing an output that has an extremely high probability not contributing constructively society. You know in some countries they sterilize or even kill those things?

More excuses. I've heard them all. Everything from "None of my kids are receiving proper nutrition" to "Inner city kids don't get the same opportunities." Oh I'm sure there was a company out there just begging to bring a masters student in education, a subject that has about zero real world applications, on for $150-200k a year.

My views are exactly what would fix the system - unfortunately we've still got morons like you that want to deal with subjective "truths," and will fight all the way to the unemployment line to keep someone like me from actually fixing the system. And hey - for the next 20 years or so - while the country crumbles, you can keep preaching how we need to keep doing what hasn't worked for the last 30 years.

As I said before... your posts on the subject lack any sort of substance.

Heh, substantial debate.

Lorenzo - I do respect anyone who tries to make a positive difference in the world, but I mean for someone who seems so bent on helping people, you do seem pretty aggressive around here. Also, for an education major, you do make quite a few grammatical errors and misused/mispelled words in your posts. I'm not even trying to attack you, I'm just saying that I believe teachers should know what they're doing and (though I highly disagree with them being role models) take the role model role with much respect (trying to get emotionally healthy as possible, seeing as the people around you certainly affect your mindset through osmosis... an angry dude with kids ~40 hours a week certainly will impact them).

Personally, I think most everything's wrong with the public education system (for the most part, I was fortunate enough to go to the #1/#2 [depending on the year] public school system in the country... I found even that to be a little boring though). I think it boils down to partly a problem in culture (apathy towards education), partly a problem with education curriculum itself (let's be honest, English/History for the most part is about teaching character more than learning facts...), and partly a problem in the teaching of things (except math and some science, many teaching methods have been obsolete since the '50s). But I don't really care as I do a lot of learning from textbooks and I like not having to really learn about the stuff I don't want to.

Education is both overemphasized and underemphasized in certain aspects, imo.

I think property tax is a piss poor way to fund education, and the teachers should be making 2-3 times what they do. However, from much of what I've seen, I don't think most of the teachers should be teaching (agreeing with Clinton on that one). I personally took a year off in between high school and college so I haven't started my undergrad (premed), thus I don't have any opinion/idea about education majors.

I think most of the country's problems stem from more a lack of character than a lack of education, however. I think if more Americans applied Emerson's philosophies (and Thoreau since that's like Emerson 1a for many aspects) to life, we'd change the trend and become much better suited for life.

However, if I were to have a label, I'd be a Taoist, so I'm not really attached to all of this. I don't really see a lot of what's going on as "bad" per se, just as something that's going on. I'm not gonna try to control anyone or make them be a better student or whatever. It's what it is... I'll do what I can do and just let the rest do as it pleases.

Although pretty harsh at times, your last two statements are sadly true to life as I've experienced it as well. In the field of education, general and "special", it seems that big hearts, sharp minds and the a set of social skills to properly apply them are mutually exclusive. You rarely see an educator with all three.

As a former Education major it's firsthand experience that has shown me that the plight of our education system is due not only to the short sightedly low regard in which the profession is held but also to the types of people it attracts. Right now it's an unfortunate twist on the Chicken and the Egg conundrum....does Education attract a set of people that might struggle tremendously in private sector jobs because of how it's viewed, or is Education viewed how it is because it attracts a set of people that might struggle tremendously in private sector jobs?

I'm not baggin' on anyone who's posted in this thread, just saying that using teaching as a means to garner unquestioned respect is a flawed tactic. For all anyone knows any teacher here falls within that set of people that lacks a quality vital to success in other fields and therefore took the "easy way out".

Oh, and on my last post, I forgot a rant about how much of the education we learn has little impact on ANY part of our lives but (and I'd tie it in with the history/eng rant from earlier) building character in our formative years.

Normally I'd be all for promoting strength of character, however, I really don't have much trust for the type of character education is building today.

So, anyways, just pretend I made a rant on that.

You are showing you still have no idea about special education is all about. Special education requirements are all about standarization and cut scores - which is light years ahead of the other "content areas." Special education has been run in this fashion for a long time. And lack of knowledge on the different disability types in special education is disgusting. So, liar or correct? Hum, tough one! You seem to need an education on what SpEd is. Here I will "allow you the opportunity to learn." So, here is a mini-education: CD = cognitively disabled. Most of these students do not "drool" or have all of the stereotypical behaviors someone like yourself would attach to them. EBD = emotional and behavorial. These are the students that are often in and out of jail. Want to work with these students? I know multiple teachers in this area that have had students that have killed people (including police officers). But you are right, someone like SheVegas should join the "real world." Then there is SLD or specific learning disablities. For these students, the mind works in different ways from the "typical" person. Of course you are much more intelligent than anyone who has been diagnosed with a learning disability, right? Oh wait, people like Einstein, Edison, Charles Schwab, and even presidents like JFK had/have been diagnosed with disablities that fall under the SLD umbrella. How about you come back with the low probablity comment again, genius. Many of these students end up taking jobs that are considered undesirable by others. Would we have any type of productive society at all without these people? I think not.

And you can continue to bash someone for what you believe would be a heightened sense about my IQ (which consistently measured in the 140 range - fun tests). Or does that not meet your expecations? That really doesn't bother me at. It takes quite a bit to fluster me - must be the D1 athlete in me. How about you come out and bash all athletes as "morons."

The job was based on my personal skills - which you are really coming off, with the name calling, as lacking. And if you really think you can "fix the system," then do so. Until then you should just keep throwing out those blanket statements. I can fill you in on what those really are if you want? My comment about people like you is a bit more specific - you know the ones that attack our profession and then run away when asked to provide real answers. I am very sure every teacher you have ever met has been a "moron." Another People that attack everyone in education and try to undermine even the parts of the system that work. Yeah, that is really productive! Just saying, that you need to "standardized" methods is not good enough. Until you have real answers, your blah, blah, blah will solve nothing.

I can guarantee no has experienced the "real world" until they have been the classroom. Teachers experience everything from students with extreme poverty to affluence. We have to deal with every type of person imaginable and we have to do so in an malleable way. To label teachers as the reason for the failure is a joke. Please, if you are going to include yourself in this debate, include your profession. It is highly unlikely you have to deal with the stresses, both self-imposed for someone like myself and those placed on us, in most other professions. You simply do what you are told in an exact manner. That is why things are more "standardized" Clinton. Most people, like dogs, can be taught how to roll over and play dead. And this is what many private sector jobs require. Teachers need to adapt in all situations.
