Well it's week 14.
I've missed a few picks here and there, I think 2 weeks, but this has been a fun league so far, and I've really enjoyed the competitiveness, and the pick em competition, and the activity in the forum. It's been a lot of fun, and probably the most engaged GLB2 has gotten me, at least since my rookie season anyways, so I thank you all for that.
Anyways, here are my last picks for the season before playoffs, which I'm assuming we won't be doing a pick-em for.
New Jersey Generals @ Southside Rebels
I don't know whats up with New Jersey's Defense, and frankly I haven't scouted them since we played them, so maybe they've switched their defense up a bit, but honestly I remember their defense being the biggest problem for them. If New Jersey has made some changes since then they could maybe give Southside a tough time, but Southside would probably still win that one. New Jersey could've been more competitive if they had some better defensive playcalling... I say this, but looking back we barely beat them, but still that has been the big downside for the generals. On the other hand Southside is ran by Sov and dredgar, and are mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. They both run multiple other great teams who are not eliminated from their playoffs, and the question arises of how much time they will spend gameplanning today. Will they be pulling a Ted Cruz, and powering through anyways despite it being meaningless, or will they go the way of Rand Paul and drop into auto-pilot to chase greener pastures. That's the only way I could see Southside losing this one, and even then, it'd be close.
The Twilight Zone @ PAIN NATION MIDGETS
The midgets are one of those teams who I REALLY appreciate being here. As far as this league goes, I think it thrives off of owners and agents being engaged, and these guys honestly deserve the spirit award for sticking it out and trying for every damn game. I don't really know what the problem was for these guys, I only vaguely remember my scouting report, and I think they just had an issue covering the run maybe, but I'm not sure what it was. Even looking back at their game scores, they never really did too badly against any of us, but they just always seemed to loss, they very easily could have been a 4 or 5 win team, if some games had swung their way. However Twilight has cemented their place at the top of the food chain in their division. I know I may be getting ahead of myself here, but I think this season may be Twilights best chance to knock off LLUA if they face them during the playoffs. Mysterio's crazy salary cap management has gotten them an overwhelming roster on defense to the point where they are close to unbeatable except in a few occasions.
Enterprise Seminoles @ Deez Nuts
I'm going to break my rule. Enterprise has a great team, and honestly, their strength is the run, and always has been the run. I feel like a lot of the builds on the team are run focused, but I'm not entirely sure, as I can't see them. I feel that picking up the S* QB was a mistake as far as this teams builds are concerned, and I think it may have hobbled them early in the season, as they went away from the run a little bit and more towards the pass. I think this may have actually hurt them this season, and think they could have scraped a couple extra wins earlier in the season when they were balanced more towards even. Later in the season they seem to have turned back towards a run focused team which helped them quite a bit. I don't know how deep the FA marketplace is for S*'s but these guys could definitely be top tier if they could find S*'s that leaned towards their current team ideology, or possibly defensive S*'s. Personally I think we might win, but I feel as if Enterprise will continue the trend of leaning towards the run, and if that's the case there is a certain possibility they might win. I don't really know where or how to being talking about Deez Nuts. You'd think I'd be most familiar with my own team, but surprisingly it's the one I'm the least familiar with. I've tried self-scouting us and I couldn't even come up with a possible game-plan about what to expect. There are a few certain situations and plays that I could say there is a reasonable chance of expecting from us, but we're not wedded to any single play. I think our biggest problem though is we didn't get specific enough when it came to certain build positions. I think we're suffering from not specializing more. However I'm very satisfied with the way the team has come out, even though I think my original team premise was flawed, and I didn't fully take advantage of the Salary cap as I came up with the original roster by making estimations of what was allowable by doing math based on rookie contract levels. I was pretty close but didn't know that salary increases at each tier. But it has been a learning experience so far, and I'm glad to have been blessed to have this experience.
Jarvis Street Coffee Squirrels @ Super Villains Strike Back
GE. I love you bro. I love your spirit and your fire, and the way you cling tightly to your build concept, but that zone has some serious weaknesses to the passing game. Jarvis's passing offense is no joke, and I think they'll take the W. Jarvis has some very creative playcalling and is very S* heavy on offense, and it shows. The #4 Offense, and #2 Passing Offense came out of that, but a lack of defensive superstars has made for some tough games for the Coffee Squirrels. However, even so they've managed to hold a lot of good teams to low scores which is a credit to their play-calling. GE... That 100% zone is killing you. I don't think it can work without a constant blitz. And to your credit, the DE's and DT's are well built and manage to force a half decent pass rush, but without a constant pressure from them a lot of teams are able to pass over your zone defenses, and unfortunately thats been the issue with zone defenses. Even with the recent changes to zone, zone defenders still have a leg down against the pass. I hear you are resetting at the end of this season, if that's so, then I hope you have developed a plan for handling the pass, otherwise your zone defense will suffer from the same problems that have plagued it the most.
Niagara Rapids @ Little Lebowski Urban Achievers
Niagara is one of those teams I like playing the least in this league. They're one of the few teams with a passing offense that short circuits my defense, and I still don't quite understand why. I'm hoping that issue has been fixed, but I won't really know until I face these guys again. Their Pass offense, and defense against the pass are stellar, but when they need to run, or when they need to defend the run they tend to struggle a bit more. Of course, LLUA is a completely different team to face. It's to the point that when I scout teams, I intentionally leave the LLUA games out of my scout, because of how much they skew the data for outliers. The amount of dominance LLUA currently has is crazy, and no one really has a permanent answer for them, and I fear that no one really will. It's very probable that LLUA will take the championship unless someone can break the cycle.
Kapitol Killers @ Kentucky Mountaineers
Kapitol is another team I have a lot of respect for. With a roster bereft of S*'s they've managed to scrape a respectable amount of W's despite facing LLUA, and Kentucky twice in a season. They are one of the teams who you truly do not know what you are going to get from them each game, and I was truly impressed with the playcalling I saw from them in our matchup, they scouted my defense very well and attacked some of my historical weak-points, and I suspect that's how they've approached every game they've played. I imagine, if they had a few more S*'s in key positions that they could make the Gamma Division even more difficult than it already is. Kentucky is a stout competitor, and they've proved it against everybody in this league except LLUA (so far) and a very close match against Enterprise who leaned on their run game to take out the #2 defense in our league. Kentucky has always leaned on the strenght of their defense. The only thing they are weak against are WR's who can block on teams that can pass. As soon as they have to playcall to respect the pass their CB's get exposed whenever a run goes outside. I don't know how much BRB the Kentucky CB's have, and I'd be willing to bet that at least 2-3 of them have a respectable investment in BRB, but that seems to be where they get killed the most, however it's not really a weakness in my eyes. With a very specific game-plan taking a lot of risk I think they could even manage to shut down LLUA in a playoff match, they definitely can beat Deez Nuts though, and if by some crazy miracle there are two 1st round playoff upsets in store (unlikely), then I would certainly have my work cut out for me. I'd love the chance for a rematch to see what we could achieve against each other though.
