So Porch, I want to know this, do you think Tebow is one of the greatest players ever? Let's say top 50. I would think anybody that becomes the first sophomore to win a Heisman, the only true sophomore to win a Heisman, and a player that will surely be up for a Heisman for the 3rd consecutive year, coupled with 2 championships(and a chance at a 3rd) and all the records I mentioned at least deserves a spot in the top 50.
Top 50 ever is such a rare group and I am not sure if I would put him there. I am certainly not going through the time to make this list as just with the number of years it is impossible. The hard part is how to judge him against a guy like Troy Davis. Troy Davis had back to back 2,000 yard rushing season for Iowa State. I find that more impressive than winning at a national powerhouse like Florida.
The first sophomore has more to do with the times. Until I think 1973 players could not even play as freshman. Add that until 1990 the NFL only drafted seniors. The fact is the trend of top juniors is bound to lead to a sophomore winning and that will eventually be a freshman. So while him being the first to do this sounds impressive it is more of a product of the changing landscape in college football than him. he won't be the last and it will become more common.
My problem is most of the accomplishments are team accomplishments. Of the two national championships he got one when he was basically a role player. Should we hype him up with that included on his resume?
Here is my problem. I think there are several QB's who could have similar numbers in that offense. I am talking guys like Young, McCoy and probably a host of others. I don't think that Tebow at another school is as effective as he is at Florida. This includes other top schools. He got himself into the perfect situation where his talents merged perfectly with the coaches offense. I think of some others who have done so and it leads to great success. However a lot of things lined up for him that were not under his control.
Tebow like all other great QB's at a school that wins is over hyped and given way too much credit. It isn't his fault and is just part of being QB. When your team is always on a national stage and you are winning then everyone loves you. They start calling you one of the greatest players ever and lose perspective of what you are doing. They start calling you a natural winner and turn you into something greater than you are. He is a great player in a perfect situation that allows him to succeed.
