gimme a break man. You think adding in an extra 2-a-day practice is going to matter? These are pro athletes.

I actually like the idea of not having as rough of a training camp for the Bengals. We always have a possible difference maker or two get hurt in training camp. Marvin Lewis finally realized he might be hurting his team more than helping them.

I was behind a car this morning and the driver had an Ohio license plate with a Bengals helmet. Her driving pretty much summed up the Bengals offense these past few seasons. Slow off the mark on a very short light, missed her turn lane completely and slammed on the breaks as soon as she got going. Let's hope for a much better offense this season.
On a somewhat sad note, was sorry to see Kenny Watson let go, but I understand why. Tough game sometimes.

That is why all the teams you speak of pretty much stink and the Patriots (I put the Steelers there as well) are the class of the NFL. It is called discipline and accountability and teams like the Cowboys and Bengals are a prime examples of coaches who let the inmates run the asylum. Maybe if they toughened up their teams, they could win when it counts....

I understand what you are saying, as overall "discipline", etc. But simply adding a few extra 2-a-days will mean nothing in the long run.

Shanahan did it with the 97/98 Broncos. Holmgren does it, and my guess is that he did it with the 96 Packers. Vermeil and Dungy are both 'soft' coaches, and I wouldn't be surprised at all if they had easy camps (99 Rams, 06 Colts). A lot of Steelers were mad in '07 because Tomlin made them do a lot more than Cowher ever did, so I assume Cowher ran a moderate camp. Tomlin also was known for easing off A LOT in '08 as compared to '07. Look at how they ended both seasons (bad month of December with hurt players everywhere vs Superbowl champs).

The term soft coach to me is one where the players get away with a lot more than they should yet somehow always end up on the roster. Look at Lewis, how many players should already be off of that team yet still remain? Dungy and Vermeil are what I would call players coaches and at times it has hurt them (lets face it, Dungy is very lucky to have won one superbowl). Cower, a no nonsense coach who demanded players to be accountable. I would say Tomlin came in 07 and wanted to set the tone that he was the boss and it was his way or the highway. He replaced a damn good coach (say what you want about his choking in AFC Championship games) and had a tough act to follow so there had to be growing pains. I think once 07 finished, coaches and players knew what to expect and he could ease off the pedal a little bit. For the Pats this season, it is two fold, pissed about last year and not making the playoffs at 11-5 and still pissed about losing to the Giants in the Superbowl. I guess maybe 3 fold, they have a lot more younger players as well as new veterans in camp this season so I think there is a message being sent.

I meant it like "softer on the players" as in more cuddly. Vermeil is a very cuddly coach. Admittedly it was a vague usage, but I figured by the coaches I'd listed you'd understand. And Dungy does kind of let guys get away with more than some other coaches.
I dunno if I'd call them players coaches. I think that's more like Tomlin, Raheem Morris, Harbaugh, etc... the more emotional coaches that kind of align with the players because of their similar passion and etc.
But let's not get caught in semantics.
I don't think Dungy's lucky to have won a superbowl at all. I think he's unlucky that he hasn't won more than one (TB '02... Gruden really didn't do much of anything except steal the Raiders' playbook).
And for your last points... I highly doubt the Pats need anything to get motivated. At this league, everyone should be motivated to win. Like Noll said, "it's not my job to motivate you. If I have to motivate you, you're fired" (paraphrased).
I don't really think it matters what their motivation is. The Pats you see year in and year out is as focused and well coached as you'll see them. The mental part for the Patriots is never a concern. That's why they're so consistent. None of this motivation will matter.

We need some new material because I can cut right through that thread, but I won't....

The Pats have it hands down...
AfC championship Pats vs. Steelers
Pats by 14
Dolphins will be tuff
Bills will be tuff
Colts will be tuff
Chargers will be tuff
then everyone else will be a scrub game.
