Sorry for being a little tardy folks.... Here's week 8 and 9 combined.
1. Calgary Destroyers (7-1)
Previous: 1 High: 1 Low: 2
Calgary rolled through the Sasquatch but got put to bed by the Nannies. The Nannies’ 14-7 upset caused all sorts of problems for me trying to sort out the power rankings this week but I think the Destroyers still deserve the number one spot. The Nannies’ are a damn good team but Calgary didn’t lose by much and it could have gone either way. The Destroyers embark on their BC road trip needing to get back to their winning ways.
2. Niagara Nightmare (7-1)
Previous: 2 High: 1 Low: 2
Beat Saskatoon in a closer battle than the score shows and proved their not just a running show. Big game against the Nannies could vault them back a top the rankings. Since the arrival of Hammerhead Cruiser, RB Koloski has fell off the pace for A5 rushing leader.
3. Kansas City Gorillas (7-1)
Previous: 3 High: 3 Low: 8
KC barely got by the X-Men but then took some frustration out on the poor Irukandji. The Gorillas have probably the best secondary in A5. It’s a shame we have to wait til the end of the year to see them match up against Calgary.
4. Shilo Silly Nannies (7-1)
Previous: 4 High: 4 Low: 7
I feel bad. Horrible in fact. The Nannies beat the defending champs for the Destroyers first loss as a franchise but they stay at 4. Why? The Gorillas beat them up earlier in the year. However, that could change with a W against Niagara or at least a big performance. The Nannies are 100% for real.
5. Unsavory Gentlemen (6-2)
Previous: 5 High: 5 Low: 10
Back to back shutouts against Prince George and Toronto but will be tested again by a rejuvenated Genosha team. A big win against a team like the X-Men proves that Niagara was no fluke. RB Jason Dean has become A5’s rushing leader and looks to hold on to it. He’ll need to as QB Gabe Dias has not lived up to expectations.
6. Genosha X-Men (5-3)
Previous: 9 High: 5 Low: 9
Came up just short against KC and then came away with a W against the Thrashers. Genosha looks to have woken back up after looking horrible at times in the first half of the season. A win against the UG would show the X-Men are still among the league elite.
7. Saskatoon Sasquatch (5-3)
Previous: 5 High: 5 Low: 11
Dropped two in a row versus Niagara and Calgary, but a lot of folks have. Showed game both times but have problems completing in the red zone. They need to bang out a few wins in a row to push for the playoffs.
8. Saskatchewan Thrashers (5-3)
Previous: 7 High: 3 Low: 7
KC is up next for the Thrashers. Saskatchewan’s defence looks to be returning to form. They’ll need to as the competition for playoff seeding is heating up.
9. Chilliwack Care Bears (5-3)
Previous: 8 High: 6 Low: 11
Put up all world offensive numbers in their last two against the Demos and the Hangmen but now face the dreaded Calgary-Niagara back to back. 4 wins in a row has the Care Bears feeling good but its crunch time.
10. Kelowna Bulls (4-4)
Previous: 10 High: 3 Low: 11
Bulls have rattled off two in a row in their 3 game powder-puff tour and will likely make it three against the defensively inept Hangmen. They’re still in the playoff hunt but they’ll need a strong second half.
11. Manitoba Lions (3-5)
Previous: 12 High: 11 Low: 13
Their offense was respectable against the Nightmare but the defence was simply overmatched. The Lions are definitely getting better but with 3 of the top 5 teams still on their schedule, the playoffs may be out of reach.
12. Toronto Lockdowns (2-6)
Previous: 11 High: 9 Low: 12
The Lockdowns’ offensive woes continue, scoring just 3 in their last two games. The Lockdowns more or less need to run the table to have a shot at the playoffs but with their next two against a rising Lions team and a decent Saskatoon squad, they’ll have a tough time.
13. Alberta Irukandji (1-7)
Previous: 14 High: 11 Low: 15
The Irukandji seem to be actually declining as the season goes on. Their next two are against the winless Demos and Hangmen…Wins will be essential for the morale of this squad.
14. Prince George Warriors (0-8)
Previous: 13 High: 13 Low: 15
Honestly, I love the Warriors. They’ve had some close games against some good teams and are always game, despite not being able to get the W. Have probably had the hardest schedule to this point. However, with tough games against Saskatoon and Shilo in their next two, the Warriors might be waiting for their W for awhile yet.
15. Fhockey.com Demos (Edmonton Beavers) (0-8)
Previous: 15 High: 14 Low: 16
The Demos have already started to re-tool for next year. They’ve plainly thrown in the towel on this season. Good luck in season 5 Demos. You had a rough haul this year.
16. Northside Hangmen (0-8)
Previous: 16 High: 14 Low: 16
They simply can’t wait to play the Demos in this season’s Toilet Bowl. New information out of Northside is that their defensive players will actually stop trying to tackle people just so their offense can get more yards and try to get Anthony Lynch the receiving crown.
