Matchday 6
Krakow Cheetahs @ at PTT Dark Knights L 14-58
A routine win, you say. A dominant display of attacking flair over a feeble defence I hear you scream. Yes PTT go 6-0 whilst sending the visiting Cheetah’s (3-3) to lick their wounds, but beneath the overwhelming score-line there were the remnants of a classic encounter of David and Goliath.
This match was written off as a soon-to-be whitewash. One of the Giants of Zeta were home to minnows the Cheetahs, and confidence was sky high straight after the victorious 'Unbeatables' clash against Latvia. PTT were assured a sacrificial offering from Krakow who were expected to bow down in admiration. The last time Krakow faced menacing opposition (NY) they lost emphatically 58-0.
Nerves took its grip over the Cheetahs as kick off approached, and it showed. The visitors first drive gained little yardage and they resorted to punting as they failed to make any inroad. From their own 47 yards, the PTT showed how the game was to be played as they marched down the field with first down after first down. At the end of the first offensive, PTT yielded a touchdown that shook the visitors. It seemed a very long day at the office was to ensue.
It took that TD to get Krakow into action as they pressed themselves admirably against a staunch defence. The following drive saw the Cheetah’s creep towards the end zone and with each play the shackles of nerves withered and broke to cause a surprise as Krakow responded immediately with a touchdown for themselves. 16 seconds left in the 1st quarter and the score was 7-7 and frustrations in the stands at the (in debt) millionaire’s mansion that is Wayne Stadium. But fret they need not do, as the home team exposed the one real weakness of their diminutive opponents – the defensive depth chart – one kick off and 87 yards later the PTT somewhat undeservedly led 14-7 in what was proving to be a close encounter.
The second quarter repeated the quirky 1st. Krakow failed to make an impression on their offensive drive and on the resultant turnover PTT score their 3rd TD. Surely game over at with ample time to spare, but as in the first 15 minutes, that score gave verve to the visitors and once more they responded with a TD of their own. Enter the special teams enter Dan "Lil' Man" Medford with his second TD with a monstrous 85 yard charge. 28-14 and the visitors’ humungous effort was undone by 2 cheap TDs that really undermined a great game.
The rest of the 2nd quarter was about inches, as the PTT could not impose their will. Drive after drive was repelled by impressive defensive displays from both teams, until a crucial interception at the Cheetah’s own 20. Even then a magnificent rear guard action denied a crushing 5th TD as PTT resorted to a field goal. Had the Krakow’s special team’s nerves not failed we would have ben witnessing a classic at 17-14. Instead the score heralded the PTT faithful to trumpet the tune 31-14.

(First major turnover in first team play)
Morale was low in the visiting camp but before they could dust themselves down and give a Herculean account of themselves, Dan "Lil' Man" Medford receives one more kick to score a hat-trick of 80+ yard TD. Disaster and the Cheetah’s heads drooped in bewilderment.
Errors crept into the Cheetah’s game and the fine gameplan was undone. Joshua McManuels found sacked by Fatty Otaku and that turnover yielded a TD for the home team, a victorious chorus belted in unreasonable amplification dumbfounded the ears of the Cheetahs’, who picked themselves up to really entertain the crowd. If victory is impossible then please the neutrals. And that they did.
The following drive saw Krakow edge inside the opponent’s 20 yard line. This silenced a crowd of thousands as they saw their team give an injured creature a thorough beating, but like a cornered animal Krakow showed venom in their attack. But luck did not favour the brave tonight as PTT forced a fumble within their 20, and what they could not do in the 1st half inside the opponents 20 they did inside their own as PTT thundered in another huge play and TD.

(How lady luck evaded the Cheetahs)
This was a commendable effort by Krakow and another TD would have been fine reward for such a vibrant display. But brave endeavours do not get you results. The wind of an epic sailed beyond yonder before PTT scored another TD, this time not from a Hollywood-esque source but a 2.5 yard rush up the middle.
PTT are solid favourites to reach the play-offs and are a good bet to go far this season, but don’t count out the Cheetah’s just yet. They may have had their claws clipped but they managed more yardage against the PTT than any other team including Latvia and Mayhem (and away from home too). No one has score more points against the PTT nor score more TD against that solid defence.
Well done the Cheetahs, I’m proud to be one of you!
