Saskatoon (CP)… There’s no place like home. The Saskatoon Sasquatch were welcomed by a boisterous crowd at the Footprint and responded with a 23-7 win over the Alberta Irukandji. Running backs Hawk Wayland and Atma Weapon both found the end zone as the ‘Quatch paced a steady ground attack with effective passing to earn the W.
“This was the kinda football I love…just smashing the ball up their guts and wearing them down,” said tackle Xavier Cain, who collected 10 of Saskatoon’s impressive 36 pancake blocks.
The Sasquatch collected over 200 yards on the ground, led by Hawk Wayland’s 104 yards. The QB duo of Joe Tagger and Alge Burro had some difficulties connecting with receivers, but still accumulated over 200 yards through the air.
Defensively, the Sasquatch hung tough and buckled down when pushed near the red zone, ending two big drives by Alberta with timely interceptions.
“It’s the ultimate counter attack. It takes all of their confidence that they build up and momentum they’ve acquired and turns it back on them,” said safety Iain McMillan when asked about the importance of interceptions.
The Sasquatch have done well in their giveaway/takeaway ratio thus far this year, posting a 4/2 result.
The Sasquatch next face the Edmonton Beavers in a road game. The Beavers are a heavy underdog with Vegas odds placing them at a 15-1 longshot.
