Here is a formula I found on another Forum.

Power rankings are pretty easy but time consuming to do. First you figure out a formula you want to use, for example I have seen this one used on some leagues:
=((Points Scored-Points Allowed)/(Games Played)/(2))+(Overall Team Rating/2)+((Wins*2)+(Opponent Wins/Games Played/2))

Then you just find the numbers for each team in your league, put them into the formula and you have the power rating for that team, then just order the teams from highest to lowest and you have your ranking.

I am not sure if anyone wants to do this. I think that once the Excel sheet is done, it will function easily with plugged in numbers. Any takers?

Ill do it for Zeta so someone else needs to do Alpha.

I do think the formula is a good aide in doing the power rankings, but should not be the only method. I am not sure if a formula is going to help the power rankings. I can see it working to a certain degree, but with fairly unbalanced league, teams that played the gutted/slow building team will be higher on the rankings. Power house team that has the lower level team on the later season schedule maybe ranked lower than they actually are.

I don't even know if we have slow building or lower leveled teams to make a difference. I guess someone can do one and we'll have to see how it works out. Eh.. I got some time on my hands today so I will do Alpha and post it here. We will see if it is accurate or not.

What is the overall team rating? Would that be reverse of current league ranking?

I found that this formula doesnt work so well one week into the season...

I agree it will take a while until it works itself out, but further in season when most teams get their fair shake of cupcakes & contenders it will even itself out.

Plus this is just another thing for us GLB geeks to ooze over.

The ranking is comprised of 3 numbers.

The first is a culmination of record and Strength of schedule. Its forumula is :

RecordValue = (#ofWins x 1.5)+(#ofWins x WinStrength)+(#ofLosses x LossStrength)

where
WinStrengh = ((Total Wins of all opponents that team has beat)/(Total Games Played of all opponents that team has beat)) | (0 if team has not won)
LossStrengh = ((Total Wins of all opponents that team has Lost to)/(Total Games Played of all opponents that team has Lost to))| (1 if undefeated)

The second Value is for Margin of Victory. Its forumla is :

VictoryValue = (AverageMarginofVictory^1)/35 x (#ofWins/#ofGames)*Weekweight

Weekweight = #ofGames * .3 - This keeps the relative value of of margin of victory relatively consistant as the # of games increases.

DefeatValue = (AverageMarginofDefeat^1)/35 x (#ofLosses/#ofGames)*Weekweight*-1

^1 Margin of Victory and Defeats for any single game is limited to 35 points. Blowouts by more than that are as much morale based as actual skill based, so limited to this for powerrankign purposes.

Ranking = RecordValue + VictoryValue + DefeatValue

Thanks to all those that have volunteered to run these projections and post them for their league we now have over 70% of the leagues covered.

I'm still getting plenty of interest in the tool from others that just want to play with it. This was always in our plans, but the continued interest has spurred us to go ahead and release it tonight.

The last one is the league projection and is widely used by GLB community. It does require few weeks of data to be fairly accurate, but it does work well. I sent the link to Tiger during the pre-season for the league office to tackle it once the season gets rolling.
