First off, all the team stats are copy/pasted into a spreadsheet and sorted. Then I fill out a matrix to identify which teams have played one another and which team won. Then all this is passed to the first set of matrices which calculates various things about your opponents and basically creates a bunch of averages. This is where I figure out how good your opponents are.

The data from these matrices are passed to a common sheet for all the data I am interested in. A few more things are calculated here (percentages). After this, data is passed to the second set of matrices which simulate out various parts of the season. Things like how many yards you would gain or points allowed. The setup is based on this league projector: http://goallineblitz.com/game/forum_thread.pl?thread_id=447611

The third set of matrices brings everything together and does a comparative analysis to determine who would win a head to head matchup if everyone played all 31 other teams. It then reports to a matrix similar to the one I use to input who won or lost. I then have this matrix dump the wins, losses, and ties into the common sheet. The team with the most wins gets the highest power rank and so on down.

What is taken into account in the determination of who won or lost is this:
-predicted points scored and allowed
-how likely you are to win based on record quality (i.e. who is more likely to beat good teams and not lose to bad ones)
-predicted yards gained and allowed
-predicted amount of turnovers for and against

This is the formula so far

Your points = (average points per game)*percent chance of win based on record + the points you are predicted to score + predicted yards / league average yards per point + predicted turnover ratio x 3
Your opponent gets the same formula. The team with the higher number of points wins that game.

I also put offense and defense ranks on there. Right now they are based on the predicted number of yards.

O=Overall (predicted yards)
P=Pass (predicted yards)
R=Rush (predicted yards)

I think turnover ratio might be an important one to add.

Average team level
Average opponet level (which is like quality)
turnovers
points scored
points allowed
sacks allowed

IDK how you'd do that, but maybe incorporate some of those.

pancakes/blocking

Also this year you can include penalties

If you're basing a power ranking on this data then you should keep it high level and not go into too much granularity.

W/L record
Opponents winning %
Pts/Game
Pts allowed/Game
Yards/Game
Yards allowed/Game
Turnover Differential

If I were you I'd weigh the top 2 on this list more than the rest.
Every other stat is inconsequential and, generally speaking, a byproduct of what I've listed above.

Great suggestions! The top two are easy (w/l and quality of opponent). I've got a great matrix built to figure that out. I would just like some things to separate the lumps of teams.

Opponents winning % can be a good indicator later in the season, but during the early stages of the season say first couple of weeks it can mean very little and could have a huge affect on any rankings if it was too heavily weighted.

I'd suggest still including it at the beginning with a lower weighting and increasing it's weighting to a certain figure as the season progessses.

Not exactly sure of any figures and id leave that up to you but thats just my opinion.

I agree.
You might even want to leave opponent win% out of the equation until a few games into the season.

Are you going to have this up before Game 1?

and, thanks for doing this by the way. Its nice to have some stats to go read when all else is done. much appreciated.

I could get something up, but since we have no stats this year, it would have to be based on last year.

Makes sense. It would pretty much be based off of roster strength.

I wouldn't put too much stock into it either. It's simply saying these teams look the best on paper (at least by scouting bars). Things will work their ways out once we play some games. And just so you know the power rank won't normally look at a teams overall scouting bar.
