have a couple of newly created Guards in D-League, plan on letting them develop there for about a season --- my 1st o-linemen --- was wondering if anyone had some ideas about building ----
both level 3

not planning on adding to special abilities or adding equipment just to get a good build started... I know Strength/Blocking/Stamina are important but to what degree and what other characteristic are important for my boys

My thoughts for the early part of the build.

just bring stamina to 25 then forget about it. Then get strength to 50 then blocking to 50. Then strength to 61 then blocking to 61. While this is happening train speed, agility and vision to 25. Finally dump all your equipment into strength. There that's a dominating guard right there!!! (easy wasn't it?)

Confidence is important for guards. Don't neglect it.

You really don't need to do anything with confidence for guards since it increases 2/3 every lvl or 2 pts every 3 lvls. I haven't trained confidence at all on my guard and it's at 25. More important things to train then that.

Disagree. Don't waste points building to 61.

Which takes about two seasons to do, btw.

After a full season, my stamina, agility, and vision are still all below 20. If that's the route you decide to go, make sure you take some time to find a team that's going to be big on interior runs, as that's where having low agility/speed won't be a liability, and your massive strength/blocking will help you out the most.

Disagree, the DT/NT will whip your ass if you don't.

They usually go all out strength with a mixture of agility ans speed. You should put as much as you can into strength and blocking earlier on when it costs less (+1 and +2) then when it costs more (+3 and +4). While you are stocking up on strength and blocking you train agility, speed and vision to 25. And then invest points into them to soft cap them. By the time you get to the stage of getting agility, speed and vision to 25 you would have finished getting strength and blocking to 61 (the last time you can put +2).

right guards and left guards are built differently. Right Guards have 4 attributes to focus on, while left guards have 2 they should focus on.

while str and blocking are important for both. Speed and agility are super important for a right guard.

Agility is important for a LG as well. Agility helps pass blocking against quick defenders like a pass-rushing DTs or a blitzing LB. Both of those players are likely to have good agility to shed blocks quickly. Vision helps most linemen too, if you don't think it affects blocking then go watch linemen with low vision triple team a NT on a run play when the DE drops back into zone coverage. Without high vision a player will just block the closest man, even if two other players are already on him. Plus if you are a RG pulling outside vision will help you find the best man to block, not just the nearest. This could get even worse when the 3-4 is introduced and there are only 3 defenders on the line, low vision could make your player less likely to see that extra MLB or those OLBs lined up further outside.

In my opinion a LG should be heavier into blocking than strength since blocking skill seems to be a bigger impact on pass-blocking and strength seems more for run blocking. With fewer runs going left and a higher number of pass rushing specialists playing DT and ROLB than are at NT and LOLB, that extra blocking and some agility can save your QB many headaches. Strength shouldn't fall too far behind though, just saying blocking should have top priority.

By contrast a team that runs a lot needs a RG with more strength to move big run-stuffing NTs and LBs. Since you also need agility/speed/vision to block outside or get down field and block someone else after making a pancake obviously one of your abilities has to take a little hit to raise the other 3 stats and the best candidate is blocking. Since high strength will compensate some when run blocking and when the RG is pass blocking he often has help from the center (unless they blitz right up the middle) you can afford a little less in blocking and not suffer too much.

Pretty much the same thing goes for strength/blocking on tackles as well. LT needs agility and blocking more to handle speed-rush RDEs while a RT needs tons of strength to take the LDE out of running plays.

Nope, he won't. I've never put a point over the soft cap into my guard's strength and blocking and he completely controls the DT to whom he's assigned in every single game. The extra points it costs to build up to 61 are much better spent elsewhere.

We're talking 24 points each for strength and blocking, right (49 to 61 at 2 points each)? That's 48 points, or almost 10 levels of points!
