Playoff edition – No Surprises

The first round of the playoffs is in the books, and it’s fair to say, the fans got their money’s worth. First place High Plains, following a blistering final 4 games of their regular season that vaulted them to the top of the standings, was upset when they hosted the visiting Florida Frenzy at the Mustang Corral, losing 28-51. The MF’ers from C-Town, meanwhile, outfoxed the SWAT Team 34-27. Over in Pro 1 Beta, the top-ranked Spurs of Alamo City easily handled the Asau Golden Eagles, besting them by a score of 24-13. It was the WAR MACHINE however who secured the most lop-sided victory in the first round of the playoffs, when they dismantled the visiting Cherokee Nation 54-7 – there would be no post-season heroics for Cherokee this time.

Across the way, over in Pro 2, the top-ranked Jersey Showboats defeated the Cochabamba Coyotes 27-13 while Tempe Venom showed no love to the visitors from Miami, beating the Red Hawks 28-13. Over in Beta it was a similar story, with hosts Orlando defeating the visiting Johannesburg Jackals 31-20, and in what might be the most talked about matchup of the first round, the Wife Carriers from Honolulu defeated the visiting KC Comets by a score of 29-7.

Just four games remain to determine who will compete in Dot Bowl CIX for the coveted Lomborti Trophy, so let’s look at our next round’s matchups…

Pro League 1 – Alpha round 2: Florida Frenzy @ C-Town MF’ers

It’s tough to say who the favorites are here. Just a few weeks ago, Florida looked to be headed towards a dominant first place finish atop the Alpha standings, but they faded down the stretch and instead finished a disappointing 4th. Regardless of their 4-game skid, Florida nevertheless finished the season with the most passing yards in the league, moving the ball through the air for just over 5,900 yards. This dazzling aerial display will be put to the test when the Frenzy visits C-Town however, as the MF’ers ranked 2nd in the league for pass deflections, with 192 on the season. The Mothers can also boast one of the league’s most fearsome pass rushes, ranking 2nd again in hurries, with 65.

C-Town won both games against Florida this season, and quarterback MF’n HOOD Flamethrower is a finalist for offensive MVP honors. Florida linebacker Bobby Bell will doubtless have something to say about the matter though. Bell was tied for the league in regular season interceptions with 11.

Pro League 1 – Beta round 2: WAR MACHINE @ Alamo City Spurs

Alamo has been a dominant force all season, but it’s possible the WAR MACHINE is peaking at just the right time. Their round 1 domination of Cherokee Nation was impressive to say the least. That being said, Alamo can bring it. Second only to the Florida Frenzy, the Spurs passed for 5,600 yards this season, and they were tops in Pro 1 with no fewer than 62 interceptions.

The season series goes to Alamo, who defeated the WAR MACHINE both times these two teams met. Alamo receiver Detroit “Velvet” Smooth (both of them, in fact) are finalists for offensive MVP honors.

Pro League 2 – Alpha round 2: Tempe Venom @ Jersey Showboats

Fans will be witnessing two teams at the very tops of their games this week, when the Venom rolls into MetLife Stadium for the conference final against the Jersey Showboats. The Venom lead the league in total passing yards with 7,270, while the Showboats rank 3rd in that category with 5,736. Jersey’s pass defense is tops in the league, however, with the Showboats having picked off no fewer than 55 passes this season.

Jersey cornerback Walter Bailey has 11 of them, and is a finalist for defensive MVP of the year. He’ll be looking to pick off Tempe quarterback ‘QB-1’ who leads the race for offensive MVP with 49 touchdowns this season and a stellar QB rating of 97.6. Tempe lost both games to the Showboats this season, but anything can happen in the playoffs.

Pro League 2 – Beta round 2: Orlando Prime Timers @ Honolulu Hurricane Wife Carriers

The defending champs will roll into Squad Stadium this week, as they continue their quest to defend their title against the Wife Carriers. At one point, these two teams were the last remaining undefeated teams in the league when they squared off for a Week 5 classic. The Prime Timers came away with the victory in that contest, but the Orlando squad would lose the rematch with Honolulu in week 14. So this game to decide who will play for the league championship could go either way.

If the Prime Timers can upset the Wife Carriers, it will most likely have to happen through the air. Orlando ranks second-to-last in total rushing yards this season with just 1,091, while Honolulu boasts one of the toughest run-defenses in the league, allowing an average of just 69 yards per game. Fortunately for Orlando, quarterback Jaylen Leslie could be just the dot for the job. Having passed for 5,739 yards and 45 touchdowns this season, Leslie finished 2nd in the league in each category.

Good luck to our 8 remaining teams, and may the best dots win!
