I know we’ve complained about if before, but it really kills defense at the Vet level when you’re playing speedy/elusive runners and your defenders continuously shit the bed on angles.

On the back end, our defense is relatively fast. I built the team to avoid blocks completely and get to the ball carrier. For the most part, it worked well early on. Around Pro though, we started to suffer due to rushers being close to their end build. As a man blitz team, it’s kinda hard to blitz when you can’t control what angles your defender takes.

I’ve been saying for years that it’s a broken system, but I’m seeing man blitz ran less so either people are aware of this, or building star defensive lines is the solution people came up with.

While two star ends would probably solve our problem, I hate the fact that we have a broken tactic in the first place. Bad angles, suck blocks, and the weird run/turn around into blocks coding should be looked at.

If you need more examples of bad angles, just look at our recent games in Vet. I don’t know if this is where play knowledge is beneficial, but it’s weird watching faster players run right into people they can go around. Especially in conservative. No matter what you set your tactics to, it doesn’t seem to change much in the dot behavior.

I don’t know how many built their defense like mine, but any tips and tricks for how to get around the pursuit issue would help (even though I’m not a believer, we still keep it around 70 on our players).

Watch the FS.

I just don’t get how even set to conservative tactics, players are still taking such shitty angles. This is head scratching play I can’t get around…

Glitched into a suck block…

Helped in the end, but if the FS got to the area faster then I’m sure he would’ve warped into the block instead instead of bursting straight through to the defender.

Conservative…. Still. Clearly no consistency in play on the ground.

And then yeah….

Head scratching overall.

Yup, pursuit has always been a super weak part of the engine - we always seem to land either way too far conservative or way too far aggressive no matter what. Not sure what is doing it, but pursuit is basically back on par with what it was before the giant overhaul to stop speed runners.

So the tweak to stop elusives from tearing up the inside allows them to tear up the outside once more :/

Totally agree. Pursuit tactics are broken. I have my safeties on Conservative and they are constantly running suicide missions into the offensive line instead of containing the outside.

It’s like, if you draw a line in front of the HB, in the direction he is running, my safety runs to that point instead of just running to the outside to cut him off.

Yep….exactly. Draw a straight line in front of the HB and the FS is trying to run to the end of it. Instead, he should be running around the blocker, forcing the HB back inside.

I plan on bitching about this to Bort soon.

Then what is the point of the tactics? Do they even mean anything?

They help tremendously when your players have high pursuit, but that doesn't change how the overall pursuit angles are overly aggressive like now, or terribly under aggressive like 2 seasons ago. The variance you can set isn't enough to change the way the default pursuit mechanics work to swap you from one side to the other. Right now, it's actually slightly better than it was 2 seasons ago as you could just, blitz almost everyone and still catch fast outside runners, but now even holding back your players bite way too hard and act like they were on a blitz sometimes which is just as frustrating.
