I have been watching a lot of games where I see the receiver only makes one attempt at catching the ball while I see defense make serial attempts. I feel that it should be equal on both sides where the receiver if in the vicinity can make a second attempt on catching the ball. its like the wr/te/hb/fb gives up after ball is dropped or tipped. what do you guys think? Are my observations wrong or am I not looking at it the right way or am I on track

Also, I might add, since defenders all swarm to the point of catch, if the WR catches it then fumbles - almost 100% chance of only defense recovering since offensive players who aren't the target don't react until the point of catch.
This also severely reduces the chances of receivers being able to catch and run as every would-be-blocker has let their assignment run off toward the soon-to-be ball carrier before they even think about reacting.
