DT should be able to backup DE's, DE's Should be able to backup DT's and OLB's(in a 3-4)

LB's can fill in for DE's currently, so the position is clearly similar.

I've been advocating for that for awhile. Especially the DT's and DE's

I think DL should be more interchangeable too with a small penalty for a DE playing DT and a DT playing DE. I’m not as keen on DEs playing LB but I can see it.

I don't think they will make this change since a team could make more DTs for 50 flex because DEs cost 100 flex.

Then they eat the 10% out of position penalty. So go ahead, be my guest. DE's also get better efficiency.

DTs also take up less cap space, meaning more S*s can be stuffed on the team by savings in cap space.

Don't see the issue with that either. You are giving up 30000+ points per person and don't have Sa's. If I want to put a dedicated person at olb I should be able too. If I want a DT at DE, or a DE at DT that should be doable. I'm not asking or suggesting anything that you would not see in the outside world of NFL, college or amateur sports.

Like Raid said, it's a flex issue. Same reason FBs can't be slotted at HB.

3 DTs focused on being fairly immobile min/maxed build on just winning the trenches, 2 speed DEs with a lot of break block and pass rush tech, 2 linebackers who are aware and have high pursuit.

You’ve just freed up a bunch of flex and cost on roster space and are running a comparable front to most teams. 3-4 wants DEs that are built more like DTs anyhow, and I think the skills are cheaper on a DT than DE to make up for the penalty. Iirc it’s similar for an OLB trying to get break block and pass rush skills, just easier to obtain on the DE.

I do think not having SAs fire is a big deal. I wouldn’t do it just because of that.

Other way around, DE is more point efficient

For power? Because that’s what you’d want in those 3.

point remains that in a 3-4 with a deeper roster there are plays I'd rather have a DE in at LOLB or ROLB. The whole no DT's backing up DE's thing is just silly too.
