No matter what running style, to some degree players always try this weird stutter toward sideline stuff when they fear someone will catch them, slows them down and guarantees it.
I think the back is mistakenly thinking he has more room to 'make the angle wider' to avoid the chaser and then sideline avoidance kicks in and tells him 'sideline, dummy'
