Why doesn't the Returner here just let it go? Is there any way to control this is tactics?

As it stands returners right now have a 100% accuracy rate at knowing where a bounce will go if they let it go.

So, in the case of these, the ball would not have made it to the endzone after the bounce.

If it would, the back is programmed to ignore the ball. If it won't he's programmed to return it.

Makes the decision making process simpler for the returner while also making sure backs aren't fielding clear touchbacks.

Basically the code stayed the same from before bounces could go any direction, so now returners just know where the bounce will go.

You'd think, but then you'd think this would be a touchback as well - https://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/replay/782381/1280057

The returner knew it would have touched the endzone line if it had been able to hit the ground on that bounce - but the coverage player was able to grab it right before then, and the game takes ball position as absolute once a coverage player touches it - even if he's in the endzone himself

How do you know this? You have no idea where the ball would have bounced.

Edit: I see your point.

Are you saying, for all the times the returner catches the ball behind the 10 yard line, if he would have let it go...it would always bounce backwards (towards the punter) or go out of bounds?

Essentially, or just bounce around and come to rest in the field of play. If the ball is going to hit endzone he won't touch it, anything else he's gonna field it.
