would interesting to hear what their marketing strategies consists of. this game is too good to not see many new users whether they stick around or not. i guess that's why they have the referral system...but that only holds so much water.

I haven't heard much besides "spend a lot of money you don't have to reach audiences that aren't interested".
We've been spending a good percentage of our income on Facebook ads for over 2 years. It's been by far the most efficient advertising we've looked into, between 2 to 3 times more clicks than any others.

Have you guys considered advertising on fantasy football websites and podcasts? That's your audience right there. People who love football and spending time online.
If it's a money thing- open up a public kickstarter for advertising funds. People will contribute if they know that money is actually going into recruiting new users.

Facebook ads are directed. You can choose to only show them to people interested in things like football, and clearly they are interested in spending time online. Also a nifty thing that we can advertise to people interested in browser games (because Facebook games). That's a large part of why they are so much more effective than the other advertising platforms that we have tried.
But I mean, the fact is that advertising costs a lot of money. Most consultants recommend that you have at least a million up front if you want any kind of meaningful exposure. I'm going to go ahead and say we can't spend multiple times our yearly operating budget on a down payment for an advertising campaign.

Facebook ads are crazy expensive. Glad you guys are getting some results out of it in terms of clicks and new users trying it out. If I may something that would make this "easier" your splash page https://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/ doesn't actually have a "log in with facebook" option that's clean. Just asking because it annoyed someone I shot the link to, they signed up through facebook, then from a browser tried to google GLB2 and it asked them for a user name and password they didn't have (because they signed up through facebook or forgot it after signing up through facebook).
May I ask, respectfully, have you considered modernizing the forum? This is basically the same forum you've had for 10 years and its a bit behind other platforms in terms of interaction. No embedded video , no easy way to post gifs/jpegs etc.. This is a "social football game" an active and lively forum was a big draw both on the user and team level.
Another thought, have you considered allowing related party advertising by purchasing teams? I think that would appeal to a number of people, certainly on the small business side who provide web services, since like you, they are always looking for new low cost ways to draw in new customers. Plus the cross linking would mutually increase your google node count as well as authoritative content ranking. Obviously you'd have to allow them to put a page link on the team page but that's not hard to code and the rewards are pretty high. This would be easier to pitch if you had user data, you could try it out at first without it. One of the things I remember from GLB1 was people eagerly awaiting for the season bonus on flex, it wasn't much but Bort would throw one out every so often. It was enough to create a player. Of course once a player is created people want to boost them, but you could harvest Facebook data so you have user demographics while exempting those who don't wish to give it up.
There are some easy active owner tools you could create as apps to facilitate team owners running lively team forums that are lightweight and could add some value to those.
Anyway hope that's not putting my beak into where it doesn't belong. You asked for free or low cost those are my general ideas on increasing activity.
