Is it necessary? It's confusing the relationship to consistency when there is a stat categort NAMED Defensive Consistency.

Hell yeah it is. DBs and cov LBs need high heart, while run LBs amd DL need high toughness. I usually max tough on all my players since it is cheap.

Heart and toughness help keep morale (the green bar) high.

But I wouldnt go crazy on it. I put around 40 heart on all those mentioned above. But the run stopper still need some heart.

That would explain a lot.

In general:

Offense - toughness more important than heart
Defense - heart more important than toughness

That being said, a QB would be nuts to have more toughness than heart and a DT would be nuts to have more heart than toughness. It's all about how much you are being hit. If you are getting hit or dealing with blocking situations a lot toughness is much more important. Most positions you can get away with 60 tough 40 heart and be stellar on that side of the game.

To answer your question. Heart and toughness are directly related to morale which basically controls how high your skills stay in game.

Consistency is probably more in line with winning dice rolls from play to play.

So essentially all 3 help with winning dice rolls but heart and toughness directly tie into maintaining your players skills throughout the game as close to 100% as possible.

If we're going to use a die analogy, let's do it like this.

Physicals increase the actual high end and low end on a die, like tackling technique and grip - physical abilities

So you go from rolling a 20 sided die with a maximum of 20 and a minimum of 1 to a die with a maximum of 30 minimum of 10, etc.

Consistency is a general cheat, that the higher you push it the closer to the high side of that die you will land on - but it only works in 'key' situations meaning it's not an every down solution - and it still has to abide by the most important thing:

Mental abilities (toughness, heart) control what the actual face values are on the die - they actually control confidence which controls the face values. Confidence can raise up to lower values on the die so even if you roll a 'one' on the die that could still turn out to be a decent roll with high enough confidence. If confidence slips it can do the inverse, causing higher values to slip downward. It's still limited by the physicals and can't raise you higher or lower than max, but it is extremely important.

You can't neglect any one part of it really, even consistency can ensure even if confidence is low that you get a roll close to the top - so unless you are completely bottomed out it can save you in those key situations.
