I see a lot of posts about them needing to be "fast". Is that Quickness or Sprinting? Or both?

Both, but mostly sprinting... quickness has recently been given a greater role in accelerating to full speed, but sprinting is still king

Definitely sprinting, but don't neglect quickness. You can easily keep a 15-25 point gap

Your weakside/middle LBs need high sprinting + pursuit + gold/silver closing speed.

I usually just do 50 quickness personally on LBs... good speed, 50 foot, high conditioning, high pursuit, closing speed like GE said.

80+ sprinting is a necessity.
Everyone on the D who isn't a DL needs 80+ sprinting, CB's can get away with 70-75 if they aren't S*'s. LB's will get burnt to a crisp if they aren't at 80+ in vet.

Actually it depends on if you are running a zone or man. I cannot speak for man as I have never ran a man defense.

For a zone, some LBs don't need to have high sprinting. The Strong Side LB just needs to able to shed blocks and tackle...minimal sprinting. The MLB needs to have average sprinting...like around 55 to 65. The Weak Side LB needs to be fast and have high sprinting 80+. Middle and Weakside LBs need high footwork and quickness. Strong Side LB needs decent quickness and footwork.

You will also need a blitzing LB, who will max out sprinting. Mine will end with 99.

I also have a nickel LB who has average sprinting but high footwork and quickness as well as high deflection and some int.

Safeties need to be fast as hell though. They are the last line of defense and need to track down fast HBs. They are usually playing cover 2...sometimes cover 3 unless they are blitzing. My safeties actually blitz some. Which the high sprinting will also help them blitz the QB.

You've been talking about your zone defense and my interest has been growing...

What would you want in a S* Strong Safety?

I hope GE is right because that is very similar to our current defensive set up minus the blitzer. Fast MLB and safeties with high BRB LBs on the outsides. I'm hoping to cause a disruption in the back field and have the speed guys swarm in and finish the play. We also have a couple high BRB/HG/balance CBs that should help blow up the play. Hopefully this will work reasonably against Vet HBs when we get there.

That blitzing LB is pretty important. He is needed to get pressure on the QB on most passing plays. Zones are good when the QB has a small amount of time to pass the ball. My blitzing LB isn't a S* either.

Been pretty tough to get much more than hurries with our 2 blitz lbs 100/100 sprint/quick lately. Been trying different things but they just seem to be too fast or something that the qb just fires immediately to an open wr.

This is with your zone defense? Tiger Cover 3 blitz?

I don't plan on blitzing much at the higher levels. TEs just tear it up way too often, may be better with zone.

ya not sure if they are just too fast or what but that blitz doesn't do very well for me in scrimmages. They act like they are evasive even though they are on power rush.

It's all about the right DE. Also try 3-4 Will Fire Seam 3.
