Can someone please tell me how the Free Pickup Players work? My first one was free but my second one cost Flex points and I cannot create a third one because I don't have Flex Points. Also, I'm unclear on how to earn Flex Points. I'm new to the game, thanks in advance for your patience.

You get one free pickup player. You pay for the other up to 3 total.
Only way to get flex is to purchase them as far as I know.
Do not waste flex boosting a pickup player. I also wouldn't buy any. They cant get n human run teams.
If you make any flex purchase you get a second Free player that is a normal player and cost nothing to boost. This is what I recommend. Only cost $2.50 for smallest package and that gets you a second free player and use them while you learn the game imo.

The rest of your post is very helpful but the above isnt. You can pay for your pickup player to be changed to a normal player so you can get him on a human team. Thanks for the help. I have another related question. So I have two Pickup Players that have or will reach Veteran status. What happens if I retire them? Will I have no more Pickup players without purchasing Flex Points?

You will always have 1 free pickup player. So as soon as you retire your free pickup player you can create another one

If you buy a non-free player with flex points (like with your player "Meat Grinder"), you'll get back a chunk of the flex points you spent on him when you confirm the retirement, and you'll need to spend more points if you want to make another.
