What defensive formation do you guys reckon gives you the most flexibility in this sim?

If you had to commit to 80% of your defensive plays to be from a certain formation (including variants), what would you pick?

If that's your base, how do you not get trashed by run plays?

ask the teams we play?

We change it up in random game, but that base has worked the whole time Moose has been a team, as a base.

Seems like an impossible question due to all the formations. 3-3-5 seems to be the most flexible.

Just looking at snaps for our team, it looks like 3-3-5 is the "average" defense.

We don't quite get 3 LBs and 5 DBs on the field every play, and we get 1.5 DTs on the field on average, but it basically works out to a 3-3-5 or something between a 4-3-4 and a 3-3-5.

Dime 3-2-6 is the most versatile.

It can still put 7 in the box while being able to stop outside runs and cover pass catching TEs and WRs.

It would need a Double Lurk play though where the SS and FS compress down to the stop the C-gap (Off Tackle). The TE Smother play does this a little by bringing in the inside CBs.

Pros: You get 7 in the box against wide sets and if you pull in the interior CBs you can stack the box with 9.

Cons: The personnel loses to a Power team but there aren't many of those with everyone running outside or throwing 14yd routes.

I actually made a non-boost quarter/dime only defense and it held up really well vs both run and pass. It will probably be my next project on the D'Haran reset
