pretty new to this game still. so how does a team score 71-0 when they essentially have the same tier of players. Is there cheating involved?

nope a bad defensive gameplan can allow such a score easily. cpu teams and inactive teams always get destroyed as well.

That was the score between JSCS and Dead World Cerberi, so I'll assume that's the game you're talking about.
The answer is that Dead World Cerberi filled its empty roster spots with Journeyman-level players on a Pro-level team.
So DWC has serious mis-matches on the offensive line, the receivers, etc. The weakened o-line can't give the qb more than 33-35 ticks, which is why the QB has been sacked over 100 times in the 1st seven games. The RBs can't break away from the defense, the receivers can't get open in time, etc.
The defense has similar problems which causes them to give up big plays.
