It's simple, have a tab for each offensive WR set. This will fix almost every issue the current system has.
Simplicity: I know know what the nay-sayers are going to bring. "But Osiris that would be way to difficult and time consuming just like GLB1". Wrong. It would be simpler and save time. I would probably rarely touch the DAI other than turn a blitz on or off and all but two formations I would almost never have to touch. I spend more time trying to get the right plays to fit than I do actually figuring out what I want to call. Most the time I can't get the play to fit at all so I give up and move on.
Noobies: I know "But Osiris this game is suppose to be easy for new players to pick up". Four seasons ago I tried my hand at coordinating everything was fairly simple to learn except for the DAI. I was looking for tabs or a drop down for formations and there was nothing. I was completely confused and baffled. To be honest I still am. Is this system really noob friendly? I say no freaking way!
New plays: They are not going to fix this or really do anything at all unless every tag is available for every play. A medium blitz is not going to do shit unless I use it every formation. I could help in the one formation I actually get to set completely.
A tabbed system would almost completely solve the DAI riddle. It would make coordinating simpler, faster, and fix all the headaches. It would be easier for new players to pick up and older coordinators could finally call plays exactly the way they need to.
I don't want control of everything like GLB1. I like this game's simplicity. However this would be a case of more is less. It would shave a lot of time off my game planning time and be more about fun than a chore.
