Rookie Ladder - Week 2

[Final edit: I'm done after 5 hours.]

This week we're at 24 games of winning teams squaring off. I stopped before the 1-1-1 teams who are hosting losing teams.

Last week I went 19-6. Holy S**t! I started tracking the games just for fun and then I somehow got on a roll. I may never forgive myself for picking against my team as it cost me a 20-5 record. Imagine that!

Since that's never going to happen again, I'll take this minor moment to make a comment to any new agents here at GLB2. Winning isn't all luck. You need a sensible plan, players that fit the plan (referred to as "builds" in the community) and coaches that understand game tactics. My picks were based on coaching leadership and if I could look at the roster and see a strategy at work.
So if you're new to this game or simply trying to get better, find successful coaches first and then build players that they want. Read the postings on your team forums, ask questions and watch the games. You'll get better and getting better means you'll get more involved and everyone here wants more involved new agents. Finally, good coaches always need players so just by being an active agent that follows advice, you'll gain a lot of respect and have no trouble getting invites to new teams being started up by successful coaches. Ok, off the soapbox.

04: Missouri Mammoth 3-0 vs. Sydney Wombats 3-0
http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/compare_teams/1063/1067
Comment: Missouri is a 4 S* team that now has 3 shutouts. They've outscored their opponents 53-0. I'm starting to regret not putting a player on this team after Kada invited me (I'm his GM/HC at Creek Valley). HB Ellis Lake is their leading rusher and currently #9 in Rookie HOF for HBs. K Too LEGit is the #2 Rookie K going 6 for 8 on FGs with 2 40-yarders already. Missouri has 11 SHIPS on the staff, led by peeti's 9. Sydney was a mostly CPU team that kidalb3rt has started to flesh out with real players. Him beating North Texas and Allentown in league with 5 and 7 S*, respectively, is impressive. The "kid" seems to have learned how to coach in Rookie. Sydney has the #5 Jerry Stiller and #34 Ethan M Smith QBs in Rookie as they've combined for 11 TDs. Still, if peeti isn't AFK, I can't ignore 9 SHIPs. Go with coaching as I expect the Mammoth's to keep trampling though I'd bet Sydney has a solid season.
Score: Missouri wins 17-14; Record 1-0. http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/game/102809

04: Blue Mountain State Goats 2-1 vs. East Coast Badasses 2-1
http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/compare_teams/375/1090
Comment: East Coast has a nice roster of 4 S* and mostly one agent with a plus .500 coaching record and a SHIP. East Coast held up well in their last Ladder game against Ground Assault. East Coast is led by #19 QB Ronald Atkins and #15 WR Angelo Finch. Blue Mountain State Goats is a new agent running a team of mostly CPU, though adding real players. The Matchup shows huge advantages for East Coast and they are the easy pick here.
Score: Blue Mountain wins 7-0; Record 1-1. http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/game/102827

05: Mykonos Hoplites 2-1 vs. Minneapolis Crows 2-1
http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/compare_teams/436/1079
Comment: Two teams that weren't in the last Ladder writeup but have both won 2 straight and so are here now. The Crows are a one agent team with no S* and is new to coaching. The Hoplites are a mostly one agent team who has recruited 5 S* all on the DLine. With over 350 coached games at an above .500 record, the Hoplites should have the coaching advantage. The Matchup also shows advantage Hoplites. With their last two wins outscoring opponents 78-0, the Hoplites are on a roll and my pick.
Score: Hoplites win 34-6; Record 2-1. http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/game/102822

06: Newcastle Butchers 3-0 vs. Nasty Brigade 3-0
http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/compare_teams/94/1081
Comment: Newcastle has 4 S* and yet CPU players and extra cap space. Nasty Brigade is a one agent team. Last week, I picked against both teams and lost on both. The Matchup is really close. Nasty is lead by QB Ty Cousins, #16 in HoF. Newcastle is lead by the #15 QB @tomic Slinger and the #2 WR Michael Jet. This is a tough pick. I'll go Nasty Brigade but I'll have to see more from both teams before I can jump on either's bandwagon.
Score: Newcastle wins 14-10; Record 2-2. http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/game/102805

06: Las Vegas Vipers 2-1 vs. Cleveland Blazers 2-1
http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/compare_teams/1099/1058
Comment: Cleveland has what looks like a new agent who has made a bunch of players for his team and attracted a S*. The Vegas Vipers are owned by a new agent and have one S*. The Vipers have won their last 2 games via shutouts. Cleveland won their Ladder but then got shoutout in league. The Matchup favors Cleveland, though neither teams seem dominate. I'll hope for an early Noreaster and some lake effect snow to propel Cleveland.
Score: Vipers win 17-3; Record 2-3. http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/game/102823

07: Default Name 3-0 vs. Inner City Kids 2-1
http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/compare_teams/1088/356
Comment: Default Name is run by Stobie with his 10 SHIPs and have 3 S*. The Kids have 8 S* and some experienced good records coaches, but no SHIPS. Default Name has the #12 HB in Dante Blaster leading the way. The Kids have the #6 QB Raw Dawg. The Kids only loss is to the the 7 S* beach babes Sandy Cheeks. In League, they've outscored teams 92-3. Stobie is winning but still doesn't put points on the board. Still, the Kids seem to be relying on QB Rollout and in League that might work, but Sandy Cheeks shut it down and Stobie should know how to do that too. The Kids will need to execute on other aspects of the game to beat top coaches. While the Kids have the talent for a blowout here, I'll pick Default Name to win a low scoring squeaker. This is definitely a game to watch.
Score: Default Name wins in OT 17-14; Record 3-3. http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/game/102815

08: Rangers Reborn 3-0 vs. Oklahoma Outlaws 2-1
http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/compare_teams/1089/24
Comment: The Rangers have 4 S* and a coaching staff with 5 SHIPs and have outscored opponents 72-7 on the season. Oklahoma has 5 S* and coaches with 2 SHIPs. They've recovered from an opening day loss to my Boys and just beat the 7 S* Sandy Cheeks in League. The Rangers are lead by #13 HB Mini Me. Oklahoma has the #5 HB and #26 HB in Grim Falcon and S* Max Mullins. The Matchup favors the Rangers and I'll go with more SHIPs are better performance season to date. Another good game to watch between high quality teams.
Score: TIE 0-0; Record 3-3-1. http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/game/102810

08: Draco Dragons 2-1 vs. Compton Regulators 2-1
http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/compare_teams/382/1097
Comment: Compton has 1 S* and yet some CPU. Draco lost their first game but have rebounded with two shutouts. Their coaching staff has 11 SHIPs and their roster has 6 S*. Compton has the #13 QB Denard Robinson while Draco has the #13 and #44 WRs in Merry Longlegs and Jealous Jones. If Adderfist isn't on a remote beach somewhere or jhiggs didn't get too drunk at his BBQ, Draco should have the gameplan and settings to beat Compton.
Score: Compton wins 42-10; Record 3-4-1. http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/game/102828

09: Fort Hood Fierce Cucumbers 3-0 vs. Canisteo Bulldogs 2-0-1
http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/compare_teams/1045/1059
Comment: The Fierce Cucumbers have a lot of player builds but are some CPU. It's mostly a one agent team and new owner/coach. Canisteo tied their first game, but have won 2 in a row. They have 5 S* on the roster lead by #10 HB Anthony Thomas and #19 HB Robert Riddick and coaches with 4 SHIPs. The Matchup and team records favor the Cucumbers, but this is where looks are deceiving. The Bulldogs are built well and PaulM should be in charge. Go with a 4 SHIP coach and the better roster. Go Bulldogs.
Score: Bulldogs win 31-28; Record 4-4-1 http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/game/102807

10: Death Valley Deadites 3-0 vs. Anchorage Billy Goats 2-1
http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/compare_teams/1053/1071
Comment: Death Valley has 3 S* and a coaching staff with 2 SHIPS. Death Valley is lead by #17 QB Kameron Wing. Anchorage is a CPU with literally one agent made player. This is no contest. Enjoy the heat and bet on Death Valley.
Score: Death Valley wins 21-14; Record 5-4-1 http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/game/102813

10: Chimdale Cougars 2-1 vs. Santa Monica Mayhem 1-1-1
http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/compare_teams/1048/673
Comment: Santa Monica has 4 S* (had 5) and coaches with experience, although it's under .500 experience. The Cougars are one agent team that seems new to GLB2. The Cougars have beat up on some mostly CPU teams for their 2 wins. Santa Monica was disappointing in their Ladder game and they cut (or lost) an active S*. Last week, I lost picking Santa Monica but until I see a more impressive track record from the Cougars, I have to go with talent. Santa Monica gets my pick, but not my wallet.
Score: Chimdale wins 7-2; Record 5-5-1. http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/game/102831

12: Coruscant Imperial Forces 2-0-1 vs. Carolina Pirates 2-1
http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/compare_teams/1070/1082
Comment: Coruscant has 3 S* and a ZONE complex. He's a man on a mission. Carolina is loaded with 9 S*. Carolina lost respectfully to the Killer Kiwi's, while Coruscant tied the 8 S* Deadly Boomslangs. Coruscant has the #1 HB in Count Dooku and #8 HB General Grievous. Carolina counters with #28 QB Esai Cunningham. The Matchup favors the Empire. This could be a good game. Since Carolina didn't overly impress me with their last Ladder win (10-7), I'll go with the Empire again.
Score: Carolina wins 10-7; Record 5-6-1. http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/game/102818

13: Sandy Cheeks 2-1 vs. Texas Rebellion 1-1-1
http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/compare_teams/435/532
Comment: The hot Beach Babes have 7 S* and coaches with 4 SHIPS. They are lead by #8 QB De Coy, #3 WR Todd Watson and #1 TE James Graham. Texas is a single agent team with 2 S* and lead by #44 HB Marques Dodge. Texas tied the 9 S* Providence Radicals in League, while Sandy lost to Oklahoma. The Matchup favors the Babes and I favor the Babes (as do all of you). So here's to Sandy to keep winning, so I can keep writing them up and looking at that sand.
Score: Sandy Cheeks win 15-0; Record 6-6-1. http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/game/102829

14: Boston Redcoats 3-0 vs. Live Oak Eagles 2-1
http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/compare_teams/1092/711
Comment: Boston has 6 S* and coaches with 7 SHIPS. Live Oak has 7 S* and 1 SHIP on their staff. Last week, the Redcoats came through for me with my "easiest pick yet". Live Oak got destroyed by Fear Factory and then barely beat the Fart Wafts, a CPU team that's adding agent players. The Redcoats are lead by #1 FB Jim Nance, #19 WR Irv Cross and #20 QB Vito "Babe" Parilli. The Eagles have #4 WR Allen Remele and #27 QB Johhny Idaho. Both teams score well in the Matchup. I'll go with the Redcoats again as they have the better record and the Eagles need to perform better in Ladder games.
Score: Boston wins 17-10; Record 7-6-1. http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/game/102816

15: Killer Kiwi's 3-0 vs. Iron Brigade Phalanx 3-0
http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/compare_teams/1084/1050
Comment: Kiwi's have 4 S* and a coaching staff with 3 SHIPS. IBP has 5 S* and a coaching staff of with 6 SHIPS. The Kiwi's have #9 QB Rob Reynolds, #7 HB Elliot Cross and #18 HB Ben Copsey. IBP has #12 QB Rob Thomas, #3 HB **Bobby Mitchell 2 ** and #14 HB Darren McFadden. The Matchup favors the impressive O and D of the Kiwi's. This is a game of rob4121983 against himself. The Kiwi's are all run, while IBP is mostly run. I doubt rob is going to tip me off, so I'll have to throw a dart at this game. I'll go with the Kiwi's since all run teams that are already scoring well are tough to stop.
Score: Kiwi's win 87-0; Record 8-6-1. http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/game/102804

15: LogZilla Boys 3-0 vs. Louisiana ASSassins 3-0
http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/compare_teams/397/1098
Comment: LogZilla Boys (my team) shocked a PR team with 9 S* through some Rookie tricks of the trade, but struggled to score against 1-2 Winnipeg. LogZilla Boys have 2 S*, the #7 QB Belgarath the Eternal Man and #1 WR Belgarion the Godslayer and 6 SHIPs. Louisiana is a two agent team with 4 S* with a coaching staff that has 6 SHIPS. LA is lead by #6 HB Tyrone Wang. The Matchup is pretty close, but with a D edge to LA. LA has more talent, same SHIPS, but less impressive wins. I think this game is a coin flip and so I'll pick (hope) the Godslayer to have another big game.
Score: Louisiana wins 21-14; Record 8-7-1. http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/game/102806

15: Busan Giants 2-1 vs. Philadelphia Firefighters 2-1
http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/compare_teams/1096/497
Comment: Busan giants is primarily a one team agent lead by #38 QB Howard Knowles. Philadelphia is a single agent team with 3 S* lead by #22 QB Chief 1. Last Ladder week I picked both teams and Philadelphia came through, while Busan didn't. In League, Busan beat a loaded North Texas team that seems to be underpeforming, while Carl's Firefighters lost a tough game to the now CPU Sunday Funday that's still probably running the pass happy strats of bhall. I'll keep riding my good horses and go with Carl's Firefighters again.
Score: Philadelphia wins 24-6; Record 9-7-1. http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/game/102824

16: Ground Assault 3-0 vs. Fear Factory 3-0
http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/compare_teams/1046/1057
Comment: FF has 6 S* and 7 SHIPs. GA has 9 S* and coaches with 23 SHIPS. Is this a game that will influence the final Rookie Ladder rankings? FF is lead by the #3 QB Disposo Phobia, #4 HB Procoto Phobia and #22 HB Eroto phobia. GA is lead by #4 QB Shall Not Pass, #2 HB Death Tank and #39 HB Reggie Wilson. GA beat a good East Coast team last Ladder in a close game, 10-6. FF destroyed a talented Live Oak Eagles. At this point, this is a virtually impossible game to pick. I'll go with Fear Factory as mrm708 might just have the better D plan.
Score: Fear Factory wins 17-0; Record 10-7-1. http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/game/102808

16: Flying Spaghetti Monsters 2-1 vs. Blue Ridge Moonshine Club 2-1
http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/compare_teams/274/1101
Comment: The Monsters have 3 S* and mostly player agents, but 4 CPU as well. Blue Ridge has 4 S*. Neither team has coaches with SHIPs, though Blue Ridge has a large edge in coaching experience. Blue Ridge is lead by #9 WR NYQUILLUS DILLWAD while the Monsters have #23 WR Joe Cooper. Both teams lost their League game; both getting shutout. This is a tough game to call, but I'll go with Blue Ridge since I ate Italian on Saturday.
Score: Blue Ridge wins 10-2; Record 11-7-1. http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/game/102826

18: Sexy Dance Fighters 3-0 vs. Eugene Massacre 2-1
http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/compare_teams/1056/1075
Comment: Sexy Dance has coaches with 4 SHIPS and 3 S*. The Massacre are a CPU team lead by a paying owner. I'm not here to reason why, but to do and die. Sexy has the #1 QB I am Groot and the #20 HB Effy Four. Eugene can join the massacre in the Valley of Death with the Six hundred of the Light Brigade.
Score: Sexy Dance Fighters win 47-0; Record 12-7-1. http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/game/102814

18: Sarasota Swordfish 2-1 vs. Bears Beets Battlestar Galactica 1-2
http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/compare_teams/1121/1020
Comment: Sarasota was a CPU team, now taken over by coach_dean1974. The Bears are a mostly CPU team with 3 S* on the roster. I'm not sure coach has the talent yet to win Ladder games consistently, but let's hope he remembers enough from his GLB1 days to put Sarasota over the top.
Score: Sarasota wins 16-10 in OT; Record 13-7-1. http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/game/102832

19: Milwaukee Beers 3-0 vs. Tampa Bay Belligerent Drunks 2-0-1
http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/compare_teams/830/25
Comment: The Beers have a 3 S* and are a one owner/agent team. Tampa Bay has 6 S* and coaches with good records to go along with one SHIP. The Beers have outscored opponents 91-0 in 3 games. Tampa Bay started off with a tie but have rebounded by outscoring opponents 47-0. The Beers are lead by #2 QB Howie Wynn, while Tampa has #25 WR Amani Toomer. The Beers have more impressive wins against more impressive teams and I enjoy plenty of beer, but try to avoid becoming a belligerent drunk.
Score: Beers win 23-15; Record 14-7-1. http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/game/102812

19: Montana Hawks 2-1 vs. Niagara Rapids 1-1-1
http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/compare_teams/971/1060
Comment: Montana is a collection of human and CPU players with 2 S*. Niagra is a collection of human and CPU players with 3 S*. Montana has only the owner as coach and no SHIPs. Niagra is a new owner and coach. Montana has #12 WR Sterling Masters. This is a toss up, so I'll go with the better record Montana.
Score: Montana wins 15-7; Record 15-7-1. http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/game/102830

21: San Franciso 49ers 2-0-1 vs. Trinity Titans 2-1
http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/compare_teams/1003/974
Comment: The 49ers is a mostly one agent team with some CPU thrown in and is new to coaching in GLB2. Trinity is a one agent team with 2 S* with a coaching staff that has 3 SHIPs. Trinity is lead by #29 QB Mark Cupp. The 49ers are lead by #37 HB Frank Gore. The Matchup and quality wins, as well as a close loss to the Mammoths, put Trinity ahead. I'll go with SHIPs again and pick Trinity.
Score: SF wins 7-0; Record 15-8-1. http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/game/102819

Note: I tried to do shoutouts to top players but that made this write-up into a 5 hour event. So I probably won't do them again until I get a weekend write-up day and even then, I probably won't do it all the time.

That tie was a mere bump in the road towards the Galactic Empire's final destination. The Pirate ship is no match for the Death Star.

If the overwhelming number of rushing heavy teams created this past offseason isn't the evidence corndog needs to do something to balance the pass vs run dynamics of the game, I don't know what is.

Maybe people were sick of making passing teams and wanted to try something different? You don't know the exact reason so many switched to mainly rushing teams.

No, I'm pretty sure it has alot to do with Queen City, Hawaii, Minnesota, The Boogie Men, etc. These aren't pass first teams controlling their ladders.

The Salty Runback is the lone exception with one of the better built defenses in the game. Though I'm pretty sure if they played Hawaii right now, they'd get killed.

Heavy Rushing teams own the ladder, and it's not close. That said, passing has looked better this season in both Pro and Journeyman than I'd seen last season. Not sure what's changed or if it's just the particular teams and builds that I typically observe that are better.

I'm curious to see how the Wombats do as they are in my league. They have 0 S*s and half the team is CPU, yet they just destroyed Allentown 69-3 who has 7 S*s.

Amazing job!

Definitely some interesting matchups. I am looking forward to Ground Assault vs Fear Factory.

All the rush teams will own the ladder for a while.

I think the real proof is that the best running teams aren't just at the top of their tier, but perform well into the tier above. Spending SP on Running just has better synergies/ compounded effects. SP spent on running yields greater effective value than SP spent on Passing. While not every running team has the best compounded synergy, it's much easier to achieve.

Hawaii, Stunners, Boogie Men all dominate their tier and then beat half of the next tier.

Could someone name the Passing teams doing that? Salty is, but I think most people would attribute their performance to their D.
