First DT and i'm not familiar with all of the settings and how they affect his play. Would like him to be a force in the pass rush or just a beast in the middle in general.

I have 3k SP to spend. Where would you go next?

You need Spin Cycle and Pass Rush Tech to be a solid DT pass rusher. Start pumping his pass rush technique, and get some more footwork too. Then see about getting Spin Cycle up to at least silver as you can with Ability points over the next couple seasons.

Break Run Block/Hold Ground + Shed Block SA = Tackling monster
Pass Tech/Footwork/quickness/speed + Spin Cycle = Pass Rush threat.

So is power rushing useless?

I have a DT with pass rush power 100, intimidation 86. Pursuit ~60, pass rush tech ~50, snap reaction ~65, and he has about a dozen career sacks across 5 seasons.

If I were going to build a pass rush power oriented guy again, I'd do it on a team that blitzed up the middle, because he often opens up a hole in line.

if you go all power it is fine - it has the advantage of tending to have a build much harder to pancake

for some reason people like to suggest builds that get your dline knocked on it's butt 5 times or more a game, that tends to be an issue for morale

if you go power and hold ground and balance you won't have much issue with that, then footwork and diving/intimidation get you some more tackles but the game really doesn't allow for many DT sack monsters

to be fair the nfl hasn't had too many warren sapps

HG/PRP/Balance aren't your defense against getting caked. They're your defense against getting pushed backwards. I've been caked less than once per game this season on average with my S* DT on Victorious Secret, and he's not got more than 25 in any of HG/PRP/Balance.

There are multiple ways to avoid cakes. HG/PRP/Balance is definitely one, and breaking blocks so fast that theres no cake chance, like many tech based S* DTs do, is another.

Balance absolutely helps in reducing cakes. I've tested it numerous times across multiple teams and players.

Gal is right though in that high skill values prevent cakes as well.

So if you have a S*, then you can go high skills/ low balance and be very effective. For non-S*, adding Balance will help stop the cakes on your weak skill.

There's the attacking component of the skills too that add value to them. I was just pointing that they're not required to effectively defend yourself from pancakes.
