This might seem like a dumb question but I'm not sure I see it. On offense you set your distances like very short, short etc. You then set what part of the playbook you do based on down to distance. In game it takes that section and goes by your frequency to pick those plays.

I just recently starting helping out on defense and I asked the guy who I was helping what it meant and he had no idea. The defensive tactics page is almost the same as offense except it has zone and blitz sections. The thing I'm not sure of is the playbook goes by how many WRs and not the tactics. If anybody can point me in the right direction or explain it to me thanks.

It's weird since there's no Very short defense yet. I've made suggestions to make goal line defense called in this situation, or middle overload, but..

Your main concern with defense is setting Short yard defense for each formation. Then you add in your medium defenses. The majority of play calling will be between the two of them, and you control the yardage situation. So if a team tends to only pass on 3rd and 7+, you may want to set your short yardage to like 6. So any 3rd and 7 situation, you have your medium defense in. If a team throws long all the time, and only runs on 3rd and shorts, you can set short yardage to like 3, so your medium pass defense is in most of the time.

Really Short yardage is the big catalyst for defense play calling. You actually have to look pretty hard for Long defensive pass plays. Theres only 2 in Quarter/Zone, and basically a Cover 4 in the other formations

In terms of the actual numbers you put in though what do they go about doing? How does it pick a play based on short passing if the playbook is setup based on number of WRs.

When you look at the play descriptions in your playbook, they are listed as short/medium/long/inside run/outside run. That's what the boxes on the tactics refer to.

It's the first line on your tactics for 2nd and 3rd/4th downs. And it is tied directly to what you define as very short in the boxes at the top.
