You can be in the marketplace right now. It's set up this way to let teams have a few extra days to re-sign someone and not take a chemistry hit. But you can go into the marketplace right now, or recruit someone else with an "expiring" deal right now.
It's free agency, but kind of like having the NBA's Bird rights (free to sign anywhere...but a little bonus to sign with the old team).

It's actually great in the you don't have to worry about team chem so you can cut them at any point.

The only drawbacks to the system are a) it's highly counterintuitive and b)the "can't retire" bug that Cdog is fixing at some point today.
