the guy was basically a ghost... ran right through him, no broken tackle or anything

The graphical representation of the dots is not their actual location. The spot they take up on the field is actually their circular shadow. SO it looked like he went through his body, but if you took their bodies away and it was just like dotball, you'd see there was separation between the dots.
