Looking at the box score in one game (with 67 total pass attempts)a total of 5 PD's were awarded to both teams.

I know a lot of those are going to drops, fell incomplete, etc. so I took a quick look through the PBP and I counted at least a dozen 'unable to secure the ball due to nearby defense' plays, not counting the ones I probably missed and batted away's etc. So if those plays don't qualify for PD's which ones do?

Pd isn't "pass defended" it's "pass deflected" idk why

So the majority of the time the nearby defender is causing an in-completion without ever actually touching the ball?

Let's see how that might work.

The arm the defender throws up doesn't touch the ball, just blocks the receivers vision, or hits him in the face, or knocks his arm away...(no penalty flags for this in GLB)

The defender is so scary that his projected aura causes the receiver to whiff...

The defender is better positioned than the receiver, and blocks him from getting to the ball (but only gets the PD if the ball just happens to bounce of some part of his body as his back is turned to the QB - again, no pass interference).

The defender has such bad BO or breath that the receiver can't make the catch...(directly tied to Intimidation I imagine)

Defender bag tags receiver before ball arrives...(can be countered with Brace for Impact)

But whatever - having 70 passes in a game and awarding 5 PD's is pretty lol to me.

Well PD in this game it means like slapping the ball out of the air en route to the receiver. PD in real life is a different story. I think PDs should reflect passes defended not passes deflected....when it gets tougher to knock the ball out of a receivers hands, being able to force KLs consistently is going to be something defensive coords look for I would think

If the ball is tipped, but the WR still has a chance at the ball, it isn't a PD in this game. A PD means that the defender actually knocked the ball down.

Okay - I just saw the LB throws deep thread. We got bigger problems...

Please close this.

My CB had at least 3 of these types of plays in this game, it would be great if this stat could be attributed to the "nearby defense". It is hard enough to grade CBs as it is without phantom stats.

"Due to nearby defense" basically means the receiver didn't have enough concentration and body control to bring the pass in with someone right in his face.

If the defender doesn't actually make contact with the ball, it's not a PD.

On that note, do KL's count as PD? I think one of my LBs had 3 PDs, and when I watched the replays they were all KLs.

Nib has said KLs count as PDs.

PD is Pass Defensed, not Pass Deflected.

Unable to secure the ball due to nearby defense is an unrecorded drop. If it is not that then it is an unrecorded PD.
