It's hard to find any real info on how these exactly work and how do you get them?

Mouseover the star players progress on your home page... there's some decent info there.
Essentially you need to build players and get them up to level 5, 10, 15, 20, 25. Each level gives you progress towards earning a superstar.
Superstar is a trait that you can choose when you build a new player. That player demands a very high salary, but also gets bonus SP, AP, reduced SP Costs for skills, and increased Skill Caps. Since it consumes one of your traits, you only get two other traits for that player.

My only real question about this is based on the accumulation of the progress. Once I have progressed, if I should retire my player that got that progress point do I lose that point, or do I maintain that progression point? Do I lose points without even having had a superstar? I assume you keep the points until you use it on the superstar, but assuming has not always gone well for me where warrior general games are concerned.

You won't lose the point.

No, your progress bar only goes down (to empty) when you create a ss of that tier. If you get up to 14/15 and then retire all your dots you'll still have 14/15.

Yeah, assuming is a pretty dangerous thing to do here

How do I earn a superstar player?
Every time you have a player complete a career tier, you earn 1 point toward the appropriate superstar bar on your home page. When a bar fills up, you can create a superstar player of that type. You cannot have more than 1 of each type of superstar at a time, and you do not earn superstar points in the associated type while you have a superstar player of that type.
Do superstar players cost more flex points? What makes them different?
Superstar players cost the same amount of flex points as any other player. Superstar players earn more skill points and ability points than a normal player, and their skills cost less to train. However, they also cost +150% more towards a team's salary cap, so it is difficult to fit many of them on a team.

What if you create a superstar, play a few games and then decide you want to make a different position and retire him. Do you get the superstar points back?

No. You would have to fill the bar back up again to earn another.
