If you are using an ELO rating system, why not assign a score to each team? It would be great if this runs "forever". Something like the chess ELO rating. That should identify the great teams and when things are more set, make it possible to compare legendary teams from different seasons towards each other to some extent.

This is implemented, ELO is just hidden. You retain your ELO season to season.

ELO rating used for ladder rankings I assume is persistent across seasons, yeah.

Will teams that are sold off still appear in the ELO rankings? This would be a reason to display the ratings on the team profile page, so that we could see what rating a team had when it retired.

Comparing ELO ratings from different eras will be problematic, since ELO is inflationary even though it appears to be zero-sum. But every new team introduced adds more points to the ELO pool for top teams to end up with. Comparing teams from different eras almost always has to be done using human judgement.

It is missing single-season ratings, though, and that might also be desirable. It would be possible for someone motivated to harvest all the game data from the team pages and run an ELO-like tool against them using whatever formula they like, and produce both an unofficial visible rating, and a single-season rating. I've thought about it but I don't think I want to commit the time...and also I might have to find someone better than me to write the tool to harvest the data (pabst did it for me in GLB classic).
