Another overtime thriller this week in the World League. This was a fun game to watch, let's take a look.

The PIrates got the ball first and Livid Tedium breaks off a 53-yard run on 2nd and 1 to move Somalia into FG range:

Somalia 3 - Krakow 0

Krakow answered right back on this Jackson Montgomery Jr. screen pass to Triana Orpheus. After breaking a few tackles Orpheus goes 66-yards for the TD:

Krakow 7 - Somalia 3

Somalia takes over and uses this 31-yard connection from Rector to Terry Ward to again get into FG range and again the Ice Dragon defense freezes the Pirates out of the end zone:

Krakow 7 - Somalia 6

Then it is a series of traded punts but slowly the Ice Dragons are winning the field position war. On their 2nd drive in the 2nd quarter they take over near midfield and three plays later they find the end-zone again on another Montgomery to Orpheus screen pass:

Krakow 14 - Somalia 6

The same series of drives happen after that with each team punting but Krakow getting more first downs and better punts/punt returns to squeak out a long FG right before the half:

Score at the half:
Krakow 17 - Somalia 6

So during halftime the Pirates coaches said they wanted two things: 1 - Stop that damn screen pass. And 2 - get in the end-zone. Boy were the coaches pissed when Krakow hit on a 78-yard screen pass for a TD from Montgomery to Orpheus on their first play from scrimmage:

Krakow 24 - Somalia 6

The offense was paying attention to the half-time talk though. And they weren't about to give up. They took the kickoff and picked up four first downs of their own and scored on their own version of the Krakow screen, an 11-yard hook up from Rector to Smash Williams:

Krakow 24 - Somalia 13

The Pirate defense needed a stop, and thanks to this wrap up tackle by Power Manning on a 3rd and 11 they got it:

Somalia knew that a TD here could turn the tide and get them to within a single-score. They got a big boost when Tommy Tax Jr. hit Ava Vincent for 31-yards:

That got them close to the redzone but they were settling for a FG this time. Deuce Dawson powers in this TD run on 3rd and goal:

Krakow 24 - Somalia 20

We have ourselves a ballgame folks! The teams traded punts again into the 4th quarter. But this time the Pirates were winning the field position war. After this bad punt and nice return they took over down four on the Ice Dragon 35:
http://goallineblitz.com/game/replay.pl?game_id=1698678&pbp_id=5517230

A Tax to Ward pass and catch got them inside the 20:
http://goallineblitz.com/game/replay.pl?game_id=1698678&pbp_id=5517250

Then a few plays later Deuce takes a dump on the Dragons D and there is a new boss in town as the Pirates lead for the first time today:
http://goallineblitz.com/game/replay.pl?game_id=1698678&pbp_id=5517299

Somalia 27 - Krakow 24

There was still 11 minutes left to go. The defenses stood tall and forced the offenses to punt several times. The Ice Dragons find themselves down 3 at their own 24 with only 1:12 left in the game. Montgomery gets the team going hitting Jason Chronic Mewes for 21:

A few short passes later and Montgomery connects with Andrew McCullough for 12-yards and that puts the Ice Dragons well within FG range:

Aim For The Big Yellow Thing nails the kick with :14 left and we are headed for overtime!
http://goallineblitz.com/game/replay.pl?game_id=1698678&pbp_id=5518085

Somalia 27 - Krakow 27

Krakow gets the ball first but is forced to punt when Vladimir Ivanov sacks Montgomery for a 5-yard loss on 3rd and 11:
http://goallineblitz.com/game/replay.pl?game_id=1698678&pbp_id=5518279

Livid Tedium takes over in overtime, he breaks off a 42-yard run to take it to the 1 and then pounds it in from 1-yard out for the winning TD. Tedium reigns supreme!

The Pirates come back from a 24-6 hole to sink the Dragons! Nice job!

I wish I had put in more of the screens as I was sure that or FB will break the CB tackle attempt almost every time.

nice write up

Cmon man. Imo it just shows how bad this GLB's Goal Line defense. If I could put LB instead of CB there it would be always a TFL. And now it's just one more play to exploit.

This play could be stoped easily, with the right Defense. I only put it in cause your Defense was not set up to stop it.

The ONLY reason this play worked in this game is that FB broke a tackle every time a CB wanted to tackle him. Most likely I am a full noob at defense in this game but I think nobody can do much more to prevent things like this.

You can get a CB that can tackle, or you can recognize that your CB won't be tackling much and use a different defense.

It's actually fairly simple

Its not borts fault that people don't make their cbs to do anything but try and make interceptions.

I saw the weak tackling by your CB`s and put that play in. If your CB would tackle well than I would not have used that play
Nobody forces you to cover that play with a CB, there are many different options to stop that play and getting better tackling guys in position to stop it. If you rely on a player who canīt tackle well to stop this play all by himself than you have to deal with the big play after the broken tackle.

You are absolutely right here and I don't argue with it. You did a good job noticing this and trying to use this play. The problem is that it is pretty tough to predict what every OC will do from GL formation right now because there are a lot more options for them there and DCs have to use some universal plays and try to cover everything that is just impossible in current conditions. This game demonstrates it pretty well. If I know you to use this play (and I couldn't know because I didn't see the usage of this play before) I would of course strengthen the D there. You caught me there.

My statement is that CBs are useless vs GL formation and it would be pretty fair to add a defensive formation with just one or even without CBs. I just don't see any logic in using them against HBs and FBs because they have a much better chance to win a break tackle roll over any CB than over a LB or safety.

The CBs on your team may be useless vs Goal line (though they aren't, there are ways to utilize them better) but that is a far cry from saying that CBs in general are useless vs Goalline.

As bhall said, it's not Bort's fault that agents build the way they do. Don't hate the game, hate the playahs
