jdb has been scratching his head this season trying to figure out why his defensive AI was having so much trouble. At 0-3 it was time to get srs. He did what any good coordinator would do, he blew it up and started from scratch. Let's take a look to see if it was strong enough to pass the test against a very tough Sofia squad who came in 3-0.

Sofia got the ball first and after picking up one first down it must have made jdb smil when the Spiders threw three straight incompletions on three deflections, Marvin Barnes and Rico Santana getting the job done:

The Radicals offense gave a sarcastic cheer when they saw the defense finally force a punt. And then they did some nice work themselves when Peter Hathaway Capstick hit C.J. King for a 73-yard pass:

Capstick then hit Jim Crash Roadgrader for the TD and an early Providence lead:

Providence 7 - Sofia 0

Sofia got the ball and got back to their game plan. This 17-yard connection from Curtis Ramsey to Captain Harlock got them going:

Then a 14-yard connection from Ramsey to Larry Jaxon got them in scoring position:

But this sack by Bort's Elbow saw Ramsey seeing stars:

Then from the 18 on a 3rd and 8, Grimace landed his fat ass on top of Ramsey and the ball squirted out. After a booth review on a challenge that a McDonald's character should not be rosterable the play stood and Providence took over:

The Sofia defense responded to the challenge and forced the first three and out on the day when I'll Take Sacks for $2000 stopped this QB scramble by Capstick:

Then it was all defense as the teams traded punts the rest of the first quarter and into the 2nd quarter. Bolick's defense was holding up but so was the Spiders defense led by evileyez and Soul Reaper (that's a scary double-date combo). The Spiders were driving early in the 2nd quarter after this 21-yard pass from Ramsey to Mike Rotunda:

But the Radicals defense came up with another big play when Maja Thurup forced a fumble on a screen pass and Mike Beacon jumped on it:

The Spiders defense forced a punt though when Leo Heat stuffed Harlan Huckleby on this 3rd and 1.5 play:

I think out AI would have gone for it on 4th and 1, but the Radicals had the lead and decided not to risk it. The Spiders took over inside their 10 and the offense finally got some big plays. Ramsey hits Brucie Kibbutz for 25 on a 3rd and 12 to move the chains:

The Spiders were at the goalline and Cade Montgomery punched it in for the tying TD:

Providence 7 - Sofia 7

That seemed to wake up Providence's struggling offense. They took over on their 20 and put together their best drive on the day. I love drives like this, they converted not 1, not 2, not 3, but 4 huge 3rd downs. The first one was this 3rd and 11 connection from Capstick to Roadgrader for 22-yards:

Then Capstick to Jeff Query for 11 on 3rd and 9:

The penultimate came when Providence faced a 3rd and 2 and Capstick got in the huddle and asked the backs who wanted the ball. "I'm your Huckleby" said Harlan and he picked up 3 for the first:

The final one was on a 3rd and G from the 9.5 when Capstick found Willie B. Fast for the TD giving Providence the lead with only :30 left in the half:

Providence 14 - Sofia 7

The Radicals got the ball first in the 3rd quarter but had to punt. When the Spiders took over they finally got a bug play on a screen from Ramsey to Jaxon for 44-yards:

On 3rd and 6 from the 10 Ramsey dropped back but Karl Lashley came screaming in for the sack for sack. The Spiders to settle for a FG:

Providence 14 - Sofia 10

The game was tighter than a corrupt accountant's balloon knot on his first night in prison. The teams went back and forth forcing each other to punt it away. The Spiders finally broke through on a drive that began with 11:47 left in the game. After picking up three first downs to move the ball into field goal range Ramsey dialed up a winning play when he hit 867-5309 for a 32-yard TD pass giving Sofia their first lead of the game:

Sofia 17 - Provdence 14

But just like earlier in the game as soon as Sofia scored the Radicals answered right back. Capstick hit Samuel Gorton for a 30-yard pass here to get them deep into Spider territory:

Then Zeke Bratkowski (who?), yes the backup QB comes in for his first and only play of the game and on 2nd and G from the 1 he hits Roger Williams for the TD:

Providence 21 - Sofia 17

So with 4:51 left in the game the Spiders take over needing a TD. They drive to the Radicals 42 thanks to this Ramsey to Jaxon connection for 22-yards:

But then the Radicals defense made a stand. 1st down, Roderick Mullen deflects this Ramsey pass:

2nd down, Saleem Rafiki sacks Ramsey:

4th down, instead of punting with 2:35 left and all their timeouts they go for it on 4th and 15 and Randy Scott deflects the pass. Would the extra field position needed cost them?:

The Radicals take over, they just need to run the ball and pickup a 1st down or two to seal the game. So what do they do? Try and pass it three straight times of course (all incomplete) and only eat up :14 of game clock before punting:

The punt pins the Spiders inside their 10. Now if they had punted on their 4th and 15 they might have gotten it at their 30 or so. But then again if they *had* punted, Providence's AI might have ran the ball instead of passing near midfield so who knows.

Anyway, Spiders take over. 2:10 left in the game. 1st down they get off to a good start when Ramsey hits Jaxon for 17-yards and a first down:

One a 4th and .5, Cade Montgomery squeezes out 2.5 to move the chains and the Spiders use their first timeout:

WIth :38 left the Spiders face a 4th and 3.5 at the Radicals 36-yard line. Ramsey hits Meta Morpho for 12-yards and another 1st burning Sofia's last timeout:

Ramsey hits Brucie Kibbutz for 13 yards to take the ball to the Privdence 11. A spike ball logic after this play may have saved some time on the clock:

Instead of spiking Sofia lines up on 1st and 10 and calls a pass from Ramsey to Jaxon but Johnny Lidz deflects the pass:

Now with only :06 left Ramsey, hurried by Twin Oaks, looks for Mike I.R.S. Rotunda in the end-zone by Roderick Mullen deflects the pass and the game ends! Defense prevails! jdbolick can let the knot out of the noose and get off the chair! Providence is winless no more!!!!!!

It's sad we actually need to vote on an obvious suggestion like that. I'm too lazy to make the thread. Someone get on that
