Pending we are able to get someone to create the script for us, we could start the discussion on how to best setup our new ranking script.
The hardest part will be to come up with how to rank teams based on W/L against teams with different records, plus how to incorporate scrimmages. I'll leave that one alone for now.
What I want to discuss is how best to rank a teams offensive and defensive and even special team's preformance. The first thing to consider is which is more important, points or yardage? For example, which offense is better, one that puts up a lot of points, but a mid level amount of yards, or one that put up a lot of yards, but only a mid level number of points? Or give them equal weighting and get a mix of the two?
Consider some of these, with all stats found in the Gold League Team Stats pages...
Offensive Passing Rank = Rank of Passing Yards.
Offensive Rushing Rank = Rank of Rushing Yards.
*for individual offensive ranks, the yardage is probably the best way to go, and is simply to get the numbers.
Overall Offensive Rank = Rank the following equation with largest number being #1...7*(Passing TD's) + 7*(Rushing TD's) + 3x(FG Made) - 7x(INT Ret TD) - 7x(Fum Ret TD).
*this does differ from total points scored because it does NOT factor in Special Team scores and does penalize an offense for giving up a defensive TD.
Defensive Passing Rank = Rank of Passing Yards Allowed.
Defensive Rushing Rank = Rank of Rushing Yards Allowed.
Overall Defensive Rank = Rank the following equation with the smallest number being #1...7*(Allowed Passing TD's) + 7*(Allowed Rushing TD's) + 3x(Allowed FG's) - 7x(INT Ret TD) - 7x(Fum Ret TD).
*this does differ from total points allowed because it does NOT factor in Special Team scores and does credit a defense if it scores.
Now for Special Team Rankings...
ST Return Ranking = KR TD + PR TD.
*this one is easy, just add up all the KR & PR TD's.
ST Coverage Ranking = (Total Points Allowed) - 7x(Passing TD's Allowed) - 7x(Rushing TD's allowed) - 3x(FG's Allowed).
*this one is much harder. You have to start with total points allowed, then remove any points given up by your defense. I can't think of any way to include points given up by your offense, ie a int return, but those are few and far between, so will just let those be included here.
Overall Special Teams = Rank the following with the highest being ranked #1...ST Points Scored - ST Points Allowed.
*much like the NFL's turn over ratio, the team with the highest positive value has the best overall ST and the team with the most negative number has the worst.
