Pending we are able to get someone to create the script for us, we could start the discussion on how to best setup our new ranking script.

The hardest part will be to come up with how to rank teams based on W/L against teams with different records, plus how to incorporate scrimmages. I'll leave that one alone for now.

What I want to discuss is how best to rank a teams offensive and defensive and even special team's preformance. The first thing to consider is which is more important, points or yardage? For example, which offense is better, one that puts up a lot of points, but a mid level amount of yards, or one that put up a lot of yards, but only a mid level number of points? Or give them equal weighting and get a mix of the two?

Consider some of these, with all stats found in the Gold League Team Stats pages...

Offensive Passing Rank = Rank of Passing Yards.
Offensive Rushing Rank = Rank of Rushing Yards.
*for individual offensive ranks, the yardage is probably the best way to go, and is simply to get the numbers.

Overall Offensive Rank = Rank the following equation with largest number being #1...7*(Passing TD's) + 7*(Rushing TD's) + 3x(FG Made) - 7x(INT Ret TD) - 7x(Fum Ret TD).
*this does differ from total points scored because it does NOT factor in Special Team scores and does penalize an offense for giving up a defensive TD.

Defensive Passing Rank = Rank of Passing Yards Allowed.
Defensive Rushing Rank = Rank of Rushing Yards Allowed.

Overall Defensive Rank = Rank the following equation with the smallest number being #1...7*(Allowed Passing TD's) + 7*(Allowed Rushing TD's) + 3x(Allowed FG's) - 7x(INT Ret TD) - 7x(Fum Ret TD).
*this does differ from total points allowed because it does NOT factor in Special Team scores and does credit a defense if it scores.

Now for Special Team Rankings...

ST Return Ranking = KR TD + PR TD.
*this one is easy, just add up all the KR & PR TD's.

ST Coverage Ranking = (Total Points Allowed) - 7x(Passing TD's Allowed) - 7x(Rushing TD's allowed) - 3x(FG's Allowed).
*this one is much harder. You have to start with total points allowed, then remove any points given up by your defense. I can't think of any way to include points given up by your offense, ie a int return, but those are few and far between, so will just let those be included here.

Overall Special Teams = Rank the following with the highest being ranked #1...ST Points Scored - ST Points Allowed.
*much like the NFL's turn over ratio, the team with the highest positive value has the best overall ST and the team with the most negative number has the worst.

Thoughts?

Here's mine:

2(point differential per game) + 100(wins-losses) + SOS bonus (10 for .000-.200, 20 for .200-.400, 30 for .400-.600, 40 for .600-.800, 50 for .800-1) + total offensive yards ranking (32 points for 1st place, 1 for 32nd place) + total defensive yards ranking (32 points for 1st place, 1 for 32nd place)

Basically, it doesn't work that well early in the season because point differential and SOS are more important, but as the season continues, wins become most of the ranking and the rest are like tiebreakers and ways to differentiate between good teams and lucky teams. I didn't include ST as that is factored in as part of point differential.

Well essentially, it doesn't have to be a very limited system... the more complex and all inclusive the better.

Point is, it is going to take me forever to set it up, but once its set up using the information taken is very very simple.

Thus, honestly if I'm going to spend the effort I want these rankings to be boss.

What if I just set up a Coaches Poll, gave all the owners a login and they could go in and rank the teams, take the average and boom there is your rankings....

Good idea, but how about if we have that in addition to the average of a couple computer rankings like the two in this thread to create a pseudo BCS ranking.

3 Rankings:

1) Coaches Poll (I'll set up)
2) Current Ranking Stuff
3) Playoff Seeding Rankings (pure record)

Playoff seedings=1.5 weight
Ranking script= 1 weight
Coaches poll= 2.5 weight

I like that a lot...

Also, somebody has to review all of the coaches submissions, just so they dont put themselves at the top when undeserving

Probably not an issue. 1 out of 32 vote is not going to cause too big of skew. Bigger issue will be if only a handful of owners actually take the time to vote. Thus weighting the results WAY too much.

We can just make a "who wants to be on the coach poll" post and then just make an account for all those people that actually have something to do with Gold...

Sound good?

because clearly gold coaches have unbiased opinions of each other

coaches poll should be weighted equal to or less than any other as its the 'human' factor the original script was spose to avoid.

Good in theory, but...

Nif is right. too much likelihood that it would become a popularity contest. I think we'd need 3 equally weighted scores.

I disagree, its just dotball

I can set it up to prevent that, just make it where it changes any vote for a team that is 5+ slots away from their position in the playoff seeding to be averaged as their playoff seeding plus the maximum 5 slots... thus eliminating the chance of any outliers causing any problems.

I do agree that maybe it should be more:

1:1:1.5 though, as people will be voting their own team higher in all likelihood, and my own team of course won't be getting any popularity votes either.
