I've been seeing this for a long time. On a lot of INTs that I see, it seems like the defender is almost forced to run in a certain direction sometimes, even if he's headed right at offensive dots that are about to tackle him.

At first I thought it was a momentum issue, but some of these dots keep running in the same direction WAY after momentum would have stopped.

A couple of these replays are from last season, but it is the same issue that I'm seeing this season.

There are a bunch more honestly. But these defenders keep doing the same thing, especially if when they intercept the ball, they are already headed in a certain direction. It is like something is programmed forcing them to continue to run in the same direction.

Kind of hard to explain, but I think a lot of people have probably noticed this, but I've never seen it posted in the bugs forum.

I see the issue you are talking about. The 1st and 3rd replays you can see it really good. They run in the same direction until they get close to a defender. This may be coded this way i am not sure.

Even though this is a TD, the defender still runs in that same direction for some reason, when the easy choice would have been to run straight for the endzone.

When looking at all of these different INTs.. I'm noticing something.

When the intercepting defender is already heading outside, like with the momentum of the INT, he is able to continue outside, thus usually avoiding the offensive players.

But when he makes an INT when jumping the inside of the route, he seems more likely to get stuck running in that same direction.

I don't know if this has something to do with that ongoing open field pathing bug, but it seems a little different. These plays the defender almost seems like he gets stuck going in one direction, even when running towards a bunch of people that can tackle him.

It almost seems as if they only care to not get tackled by the WR that is behind them for the first 3-4 ticks after the INT.

This does seem a little buggy, but on the first link in the OP the movements were understandable.

Even some of the ones jumping inside to get the pick I get a feel of the pathing being "decent" but I do see what your saying.

Here is a really bad one

Easy pick 6 - but runs right into the offensive line.

Hmm..

I think the WR may have been catching him so he started taking angles. Not saying it's right..

We probably should file something on this..

Edit - After more thought I think this does really probably belong with open field pathing. Similar to how offense players act on breakaways with defenders closely behind..

Well if we put it with open field pathing, then it will never get fixed, just like that bug.

That is why I was trying to keep it apart.

I really feel that it is in a way that bug..

Every really funky replay had a WR threatening from behind.

Which makes me think that the INT return looks weird.

It's not vision as most CB's are well over 70 in vision..

I think that would be enough to help with a solid return.

I do think they are like running backwards almost..

It's almost as if there is a spot in the middle of the field they need to hit before they can go to the sideline

Looks like what is happening, is the Defender is judging their "threat to being tackled" as the nearest player. They're thus avoiding the WR by jumping towards the center of the field.

Nearly 100% of passes will come from the QB at the middle of the field passing to a WR/TE/HB outside of the box. The defender obviously must "Jump" the route and by rule, be closer to the middle than the receiver.

They then determine the receiver to be the nearest threat and run away which, as stated before, would be, by rule, towards the middle of the field. Only when another player (o-linemen) in these cases become the closest threat do they run an alternate route.

Thoughts?

That's pretty much what I'm saying..
