Got busy and missed week 2 so I'm picking up here again with game 3 of this season with recaps of all 16 games in the league. A few close ones this week, more than a few blowouts. So, starting in the Alpha league...

Amsterdam Fire 38, Zurich Gnomes 6
A very efficient display by the two-headed passing attack of the Fire left the Zurich offense watching a lot of this one. The two QBs combined for 245 yards, 1 TD, and no interceptions. Amsterdam's Kenny Miles finished the day with 4 touchdowns. His first came on the opening drive of the game, set up by this 34.5 yard strike from Cutler to Fracker.

Tiburg Fighters 9, Paris Penguins 23
The Penguins scored 16 unanswered points in the second half to put away the Fighters. Big Willie Stark led the way for the Penguins completing over 80% of his passes for 150.5 yards and 2 TDs. He hit a wide open Ahmad Muhammad for 23 yards on this play that gave the Penguins the lead for good.

Liverpool Scousers 23, Cherry Valley Wizards 10
The Scouser offense piled up 232 yards on the ground in this one. The Wizards had trouble getting anything going on the ground and went to the air early and often in an attempt to stay in this one. Agility and Dauterive pounded the Wizards into submission combining for 50 carries and the game's first touchdown here in the second quarter.

Ljublana Chamois Scabs 10, Barcelona Bulls 24
Two stout defenses kept the offenses in the air in this one. Barcelona's Catches McGee reeled in 7 catches for 117.5 yards, while on the other side, Ben Boerger pulled in 3 big catches for 81.5 yards. Perhaps none of the long TD passes were bigger than this one from McLovin to Velvet Jonez in the first half to tie the Scabs at 7.

Judah Lions 0, Rotterdam Harbourmasters 31
Employing a tough defense and balanced offense, Rotterdam never let Judah even get in this one. Rotterdam capped their first possession of the game with this 37 yard pass from Silas Fox to Tiny Callahan.

Whitechapel Rippers 37, Madrid Hares 7
Whitechapel's offense had an easy day as their defense stifled the Hares from the beginning of this one. Strong safety Brian Lee was every where and finished the game with 10 tackles. Defensive end Brandon Karsten got in the backfield on several plays to disrupt the Madrid quarterback and even snagged this interception that he rumbled all the way to the house for 6.

Berlin Blitzkrieg 10, Massillon Grizzlies 20
The Blitzkrieg couldn't overcome the Grizzly defense, managing just 41 rushing yards. This pass from Obie Da'Tiger to Bye Bye See Ya in the third quarter was enough to ensure the victory for Massillon.

Scotland Spartans 14, West Yorkshire Bling 17
Perhaps the most exciting game of the week, this one came down to the fourth quarter where the Spartans led by 4 with less than two minutes to go. Until with 1:37 to play, Kennedy McClane hit Joachim Murat with this 57 yard TD pass on 4th and 7.

Zeta Conference recap...

Liege Red Roosters 0, Cologne Assassins 55
The Assassins' running back committee dominated another game, combining for 440 yards and 6 TDs. The Red Roosters never got into any kind of rhythm in this one before it was well out of hand. The bloodshed started on Cologne's first play with this 60 yard strike from Shad Liggit to Trevor Sorensen.

Rome Bulls 12, Brighton Bears 23
Two of the early Zeta conference favorites matched up this week in Brighton where the Bears overcame turnovers to win this one over the Bulls. Brighton was led by their QB Flex EZ who went 24 for 39 and amassed 210 yards to go with his 2 TDs. The game was a fight from the beginning. Brighton gave themselves some breathing room, breaking open a 10-9 game with this 50 yard TD pass from EZ to Phil Elliot.

Bay Area Invaders 0, Italian Stallions 34
The Stallions piled up over 300 yards on the ground. Three second quarter TDs sealed the deal in this one early.
T'Chaka had two of those early TDs, pounding it in from close. This interception by Indiana Jones set up the first score.

Eindhoven Breakers 13, Rockaway Knights 30
After trading scores early on, Rockaway pulled away in the second half. They capped a 9 play drive to open the second half with this TD pass from Golden Accuracy to Y Dopen, giving them a 10 point lead that the Breakers could never overtake.

Gibraltar Monkeys 0, Camelot Kings 45
GivinUTha Pike continued to build on his stellar early season with a 179 yard, 3 touchdown performance against an overmatched Gibraltar squad. His first TD came on this 7 yard run in the first quarter.

Copenhagen Razorbacks 3, Chelsea Cardinals 51
Bouncing back from their week 2 loss, the Cardinals gained 558 yards on 102 offensive plays. The Chelsea backfield duo of Dawson and Curry combined for 237 yards and 5 TDs. Wide receiver Paul Hart also contributed 109 yards and 2 touch downs on 4 catches, including this 57 yarder near the end of the first half.

Helsinki Hammers 7, Ironton Tanks 12
The Tanks come away with a win behind a tough defense and the sure-footed Paige Turner, who was a perfect 4 for 4 on field goals including a 42 yarder to put the Tanks up 12-0 late. The Ironton defense held Helsinki scoreless for 57 minutes until this touchdown pass from Adrian Rollins to No Whammy in the fourth quarter. It proved too little, too late for the Hammers.

Hamburg Parrots 31, Downey Vikings 13
Hamburg and their unusual committee of quarterbacks got in the win column this week. Mart Barlow led the way, rushing for 154 yards, and the 3-headed quarterback committee pitched in, going 18 for 27 for 149 yards and 2 TDs.
This pass from Hood Rat to Ian Anderson in the first quarter gave them a 10-3 lead that they would never relinquish.

I'm a writer, but not a journalist. I have, like most other males my age, seen sportscenter possibly too many times in my life. I used to bartend at a sports bar years ago and during the day, you'd see the same episode of sportscenter about 15 times daily.

Right now, I agree with the sentiment that the Zeta conference is a bit tougher than the Alpha. The teams at the top of both conferences are hard to differentiate at this point, but Zeta has a few more teams in that top group right now.

I always worry about the teams that can win "ugly". Two teams I think bear keeping an eye on are the Grizzlies in Alpha and the Tanks in Zeta. Both teams appear well prepared for the ugly games.
