Round one had a few interesting outcomes with Zimbabwe taking down the Fish and Wallachia outscoring Thompson but the most surprising to me was Lake Opeta winning handily over Darfur. Once again props to the Lake Opeta staff for stepping up with a big win. Here's a quick overview of the 2nd round:
Lion:
(1) Pretoria vs (5) Wallachia - Pretoria shut down a game Samoan team that was playing some good dotball at season's end. They're continuing their steady march towards the title game but will have to get by a Wallachia team that outlasted a very strong Thompson squad in what looked like an Arena Football League game. The regular season matchup was a barnburner if Wallachia can keep their offense clicking, it looks to be another exciting matchup. In the end, the Crusaders just have too much and will march on to the conference championship. Pretoria 45 - 30.
(2) Bamako vs (3) Ironton - Two very strong and well coached teams. Bamako came away with the victory in the regular season where both teams failed to reach the end zone. Expect another defensive struggle here that will likely go down to the wire. I seriously just flipped a coin....Ironton 17 - 16
Elephant:
(1) Kiev vs (4) Lake Opeta - The Dynamo are just freakin' ridiculous but I will have to give props to Wrightstown for a respectable showing in round 1. Meanwhile, the Little Lake that Could made a statement on their home field whipping a very hot Darfur team (and I admit I had it figured the other way around). However, Kiev is a different story and while I expect Lake Opeta to have a solid gameplan, I just don't think it's going to work out they way they'd like. Kiev 48 - 16
(2) Sahara vs (6) Zimbabwe - Stu completed a surprising season sweep of the Little Fish in the only big upset of round 1. Similar to Lake Opeta, Zimbabwe does an excellent job with gameplanning. The regular season matchup was a close one but Sahara has really turned it on these last few weeks and I dont' see this one being as tight. Sahara gets their rematch with Kiev next week. Sahara 34 - 20
Good Luck to all the playoff teams this week......hoping all of them are competitive. It'd be a great way to wind down what's been an excellent season.
