Europe East AAA #2 Power Rankings
created by sawedust

INTRODUCTION

Welcome to this week's edition of sawedust's EEAAA2 Power Rankings, (unofficially) sponsored by SPAM luncheon meat. The number one choice of brand-name luncheon meat in all of Hawaii.

It is week 13 in Europe East AAA #2, and we are nearing the end of the season. Teams are looking for that final push for the playoffs, while others are already looking forward to next season. Let's recap the games of importance in Week 12.

Last week's number one team, the Stalingrad Gryphon Army, makes a strong case to retain their top rank with a big 51-0 victory over the Nebaska Huskers. That great performance makes Stalingrad the top-ranked team on both sides of the ball: SGA now has the number one offense AND defense according to the sPR formula.

Second-ranked Lafayette barely squeaked by a surging Austin Pirates team, 10-7. The Rajuns Cajuns dominated the Pirates in every category, but three picks by LRC signal caller Jack Tack made this game a lot closer than it should have been. Could this drop LRC in this week's rankings?

The Combat Warriors from the Alpha Conference are making waves in the league after a decisive 34-3 win over Dnipropetrovsk. Once believed to be an easy win for the Alpha powerhouse teams, Combat is now a potential playoff contender. This win should surely boost them up the rankings this week.

Last but not least, the Nizhny Novgorod Vetz pulled off another upset this week, defeating the Krakow Outlaws by a score of 19-16. Nizhny controlled this game throughout, and their win makes it a two-way race in Zeta for home-field advantage with Krakow's loss.

Oh, one other thing. Congratulations to the Lowell Bengal Tigers for their first win this season against Albuquerque. I know it was difficult for a new team to enter such a highly competitive league, but you guys have done well in making it this far and I hope you take this season as a learning experience for future seasons to come. You guys are learning from the best!

For those of you who are new to the sawedust Power Ranking system, here's an explanation of how these rankings have been set up:

The following statistics have been broken down into two parts: Overall Season and Last Four Games. The "Overall" portion takes into account a team's performance over the entire season. The "Last Four Games" portion takes into account a team's recent performances. By using the L4 in my stats, I am able to accurately gauge how well a team is currently doing (if players were signed/released, etc). Anyway, here are the stats used...

Win-Loss
For the most part, winning is everything. More wins equals more points in the rankings.

Strength of Schedule
This determines the level of opponents a team has faced.

Margin of Victory
There is no room for sympathy in GLB. Blow your opponents out in order to move up in the rankings.

Points For/Against
This gauges the overall strength of a team's offense and defense.

Miscellaneous
Players, tactics, etc.

UPDATES AND EXTRA INFO
I was wondering what the problem was the power rankings numbers. I had tried a lot of things in my attempt to fix how skewed they were, but I could not figure it out. Finally, I decided to open up my formula and spreadsheet to another GLB user to look over. Within minutes, he found the problem.

One of the cell references had a typo in it, spread throughout the entire column.

I immediately fixed it and voila, it was good as gold. I want to thank him (he knows who he is, I will not mention his name so that others won't be bugging him for the formula and spreadsheet) for helping me fix this problem. Thanks to everyone else also for their suggestions in how to make the sPR better.

Finally, I want to make sure that everyone knows I apologize for yesterday's tardiness in the power rankings, sometimes real life can be very hard to manage. I am lucky that I still have your support and this game, which has filled the gaps in my days and continually keep me busy. You guys rock.

So with that out of the way...

Here are your OFFICIAL Week 13 Power Rankings!

THE TOP TEN

1. Stalingrad Gryphon Army (12-1), 50.891
There's no doubt that Stalingrad is the number one team, especially after their destruction and demolition of the Nebaska Husker defense. Stalingrad also lays claim to having the number one offense AND number one defense in the league, thus earning them the triple crown here in EEAAA2. It isn't all shits and giggles though for SGA, who still need to face Demoniak, San Jose, and surging Combat in their final games of the regular season. Last game: Win vs. Nebaska Huskers (5-8), 51-0... Next game: Away at Demoniak Piggies (8-5)... Last week: #1 (same)

2. Prague Monarchs (12-1), 50.117
THE surprise team of the year, Prague climbs up another spot with a decisive 43-6 win over ATL. There can be no one out there that believes Prague isn't worthy of this spot, and if the Monarchs can beat Barger Hill next week, you can expect that Prague will be the favorites to win the Alpha Championship. Last game: Win at ATL Riders (6-7), 41-7... Next game: Away at Barger Hill Burglars (12-1)... Last week: #3 (+1)

3. Lafayette Rajun Cajuns (12-1), 49.785
The win over Austin was waaaaay too close for comfort for Lafayette, whose defense seems to be wearing down after being very dominant the entire season. It's not quite an easy end of the regular season for LRC, who faces Budapest, Samara, and Barger Hill for their final three. Last game: Win at Austin Pirates (8-5), 10-7... Next game: At home vs. Budapest Tigers (8-5)... Last week: #2 (-1)

4. Barger Hill Burglars (12-1), 44.111
BHB remains Alpha's second most powerful team, as shown by a ruthless 71-0 blowout over the rebuilding Wisla Krakow. Everyone cannot wait for next week's Game of the Week, which is Alpha's version of Stalingrad vs. Lafayette. However, that's not all for BHB... Lafayette lurks in Week 16. Last game: Win at Wisla Krakow (5-8), 71-0... Next game: At home vs. Prague Monarchs (12-1)... Last week: #4 (same)

5. Amsterdam Dirty Dozen (10-3), 35.642
It is now nine straight wins for the Dirty Dozen and their third straight shutout, beating Minsk 22-0 on the road. It seems as if Amsterdam has found the internal spark that catapulted them to the EEA championship last year, and what a great time to find it. Week 15's matchup with Detroit will most likely determine where ADD is ranked for the playoffs. Last game: Win at Minsk Berzerkers (5-8), 22-0... Next game: At home vs. Albuquerque Regulators (2-11)... Last week: #6 (+1)

6. Krakow Outlaws (11-2), 33.447
Stunning loss to Nizhny this week sends Krakow out of the top five. Krakow has pretty much locked up a playoff spot, but where they end up still needs to be determined. The only difficult game for them in these last three may be Windy City, but the Bears' track record hasn't been great against high-ranked teams. Last game: Loss at Nizhny Novgorod Vetz (11-2)... Next game: At home vs. Elancourt Templiers (3-10)... Last week: #5 (-1)

7. Windy City Bears (10-3), 31.376
Throw the Bears in the Alpha Conference, and they could very well be undefeated. Windy City's played very well this season, but has been placed in the stronger top-heavy conference filled with Stalingrad, Lafayette, and Krakow. They have two tough games with San Jose and Krakow up next. Last game: Win vs. Demoniak Piggies (8-5), 21-3

8. Kiev Cosmonauts (9-4), 30.834
Kiev looks to clinch at least the fourth seed in the Alpha Conference by winning out, as they hold the tiebreaker over both Detroit and GCP. The Cosmonauts put in a fine performance against Bratislava, beating the Redskins 30-10 on the road. Easy schedule left for Kiev, and I expect them to take full advantage of it. Last game: Win at Bratislava Redskins (4-9), 30-10... Next game: At home vs. R U N? Blackshirts (2-11)... Last week: #10 (+2)

9. Detroit Cheetahs (9-4), 29.69
It is indeed a win and slip in the rankings week for Detroit, still recovering from the upset loss to Combat. In Coach K's return to the tactical settings, the Cheetahs were able to shut out the Panthers 24-0. Reading this now, it feels like Alpha is home to a lot of feline-based mascots... next week, the Cheetahs face the Bengal Tigers, who finally won their first game. Last game: Win vs. Ufa Panthers (3-10), 24-0... Next game: Away at Lowell Bengal Tigers (1-12)... Last week: #8 (-1)

10. The Geriatric Couch Potatoes (9-4), 25.466
A shift in strategy turned out to be highly successful for GCP as they unleashed their offensive game at R U N?, putting up 64 in the process. R U N? may not have been much competition, but if the GCP offense plays the same way they did this week, it could spell big trouble for the top four seeds in Alpha. Last game: Win at R U N? Blackshirts (2-11), 64-0... Next game: At home vs. Minsk Berzerkers (5-8)... Last week: #9 (-1)

CONTENDING FOR A TOP SPOT

11. Combat Warriors (8-5), 23.994
Alpha Conference, beware. The Combat Warriors are finding a way to win, no matter the opposition. Combat's 34-3 win over a fading Dnipropetrovsk team is just the boost that they needed in the weeks prior to t he playoffs. It's now six straight wins for Combat. Last game: Win at Dnipropetrovsk Express (7-6), 34-3... Next game: At home vs. Wisla Krakow (5-8)... Last week: #16 (+5)

12. San Jose Baggers (8-5), 22.214
The Baggers are playing well at the most opportune time in the season, making their run for one of Zeta's last few playoff spots with a five-game winning streak. Their 80-7 drubbing of Elancourt this week may have skewed their result this week, but great games against Windy City and Stalingrad will show SJB's true skill. Last game: Win at Elancourt Templiers (3-10), 80-7... Next game: At home vs. Windy City Bears (10-3)... Last week: #17 (+5)

13. Austin Pirates (8-5), 21.396
Great effort by Austin against the former number-one ranked Lafayette Rajun Cajuns. Austin is one of the surprise teams this season, and has added to the tough competition over in the Zeta Conference. The Pirates still have a good chance to make the postseason. Last game: Loss vs. Lafayette Rajun Cajuns (12-1), 10-7... Next game: Away at Nebaska Huskers (5-8)... Last week: #11 (-2)

14. Nizhny Novgorod Vetz (7-6), 19.784
A big upset in the Zeta Conference pushes Nizhny up four spots and puts Nizhny in a position where the playoffs are once again a possibility. Nizhny controlled this game throughout and Krakow was no longer a threat in the fourth quarter. Great win for NNV. Last game: Win vs. Krakow Outlaws (11-2), 19-16... Next game: Away at Athenian Pitbulls (2-11)... Last week: #18 (+4)

18. Samara Salukis (7-6), 6.119
19. ATL Riders (6-7), 5.353
20. Wisla Krakow (5-8), 4.075
21. Minsk Berzerkers (5-8), -6.2
22. Nebaska Huskers (5-8), -6.601

Yeah, I guessed as much. We had to completely dominate this week score wise to keep our last ranking. In this league an easy weak hurts your overall in the PR. Still in the top ten for now, although unless we win 200-0 next week I imagine that difference between GCP and us will slip a bit.

So how many playoff spots are there?
Last season we were not even close.....

16, 8 for each conference. Though your seeding and whether you make it into the top 8 is shown on the league page, not by the power rankings.

Unless ATL wakes up out of the nightmare it's in, even losing all 3 of your games and you have a fighting chance.
